New ATI AA Mode - Temporal AA?

Posted by: Newsfactory on: 04/27/2004 03:10 PM [ Print | 6 comment(s) ] · 8628 views

Some of the forum members over at Beyond3D, might of found a new AA mode called Temporal AA! which can be enabled in the current ATi drivers! Here's what MuFu had to say .... HOLY CRAP, IT WORKS IN UT2004!

Absolutely positive - went from 4xT to 2x and the difference is so obvious. Plus you can see the tiniest bit of shimmer sometimes on high contrast edges (e.g. lanterns in dm-rankin) but it's not noticeable when moving or on low contrast boundaries.

Just did all the registry tweaks and was going to reboot and goof around with it. The thread at B3D has all the instructions on it, but I suggest you read a bit past BloodBob's first post as there are a few good tips to make it a bit easier further down. (Or I quoted 'em all in me story at EB, whichever)

Fun stuff, great find!

Yup...ATI must be pissed it got out.

It works so amazing you have to try it to believe it!

I tried UT2004 and it looks awesome even at 640 * 480 4xAA and 2xTemp (more or less like 8X AA)

At 800 *600 with same settings, Images looks as good as NV40's w/AA that leaked out before launch.

1024 *768 and up....sorry....nothing compares.

The weakness comes in the way it performs...since it alternates methods by frame (fooling your eye), if you get a low framerate (less than 30-40fps the game will look weird because you'll notice the alternate methods)
By the same reason it's impossible to take an image, so a movie or try it yourself are the only ways to go.

LOL! Ati has a cheat that actually increases IQ (hint NV). And for sure if they planned to market the R420 as a card that could perform twice as better in AA situations per clock compared to the r3x0 they must be pissed right now. Some heads might roll there.

I'm having no problems with it whatsoever at 1024x768@100Hz on a CRT, the people having flicker issues seem to be more the LCD ones.

But for me it's all good and just mind-blowing!!! :D
