My Windows Vista Beta 2 Reliability Experience

Posted by: Newsfactory on: 06/26/2006 11:27 PM [ Print | 3 comment(s) ] · 2039 views

My reliability experience with Windows Vista Beta 2 hasn't been all that positive: Find out what went wrong with my main desktop PC over the past month as I tried to make Windows Vista my sole OS.

I was actually hoping that Microsoft would delay the public release of Windows Vista and would instead ship a post-Beta 2 build, such as the excellent build 5456 that it just released. Ultimately, Microsoft did of course ship Beta 2 publicly, and despite my concerns it appears that many of the people who downloaded it aren't having the same kinds of problems I did. Just before installing build 5456 on my desktop system late Friday night, I decided to take a quick run through the new Reliability Monitor, which is part of the Performance Diagnostic Console. You can find this in Vista by opening the Start menu and typing perf into the instant search box.

It's funny how people write up these kinds of articles and make it seem like "OMG!!!!11!! Teh M$ windowz vista is teh crap!!!!!111!!one!"

They seem to forget that this is UNFINSIHED CODE and a NON-COMPLETED PROJECT. Previously on W2S there was a link to a story where a website compared XP to Vista Beta 2. Thety made it seem that b/c it couldn't games like BF2, FEAR, etc. as well as (a 5 year old retial shipped) Windows XP that it was crap.

I had it on my computer for three days but it just isn't ready for prime time yet. My problems seemed centered around my X-Fi soundcard -- blue screens and the fact that Creative simply did not have a set of drivers that were even remotely acceptable. The other interesting issue was one where the keyboard would lose it's connection on reboots. To fix it, all I had to do was swap USB slots with the kb and the mouse, but it was just a nuisance.

But I knew this was a beta. I'd hoped to be able to use it, but I wasn't exactly shocked when I could not. And I learned from my short time with Vista that when they get it right, it's going to be a vastly superior operating system than XP. They got a lot of hopefully useful error reports from me and I got a tantalizing preview of things to come. I believe that was win-win.

Vista OS is now more complex then ever, and that's why it's so reliable....
