Sony Corp. said it has sold about 600,000 modem adapters since the devices went on sale earlier this year ...

Offering network capabilities is critical to Sony, which plans to release a version of its popular "EverQuest" multiplayer game next year. Internet access also provides Sony with the opportunity to sell movies and music to PlayStation 2 owners, an audience that now numbers more than 40 million.

In Japan, Sony has shipped about 200,000 network kits, which include a modem adapter, a hard disk drive and software, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. said. Sony's game unit has sold about 400,000 modem adapters in the U.S., it said.
