Microsoft's SPOT reviewed @ TechSpot

About four years ago, Microsoft's Research and Development team came up with a new technology called Smart Personal Object Technology (SPOT) that uses FM radio signals to broadcast news, weather and other information to wristwatches. The first Smart Watches leveraging SPOT were first launched last January at the Consumer Electronics Show however it did take them a few extra months to get the wireless service running with all its features and have wristwatches available more widely.

Why would I want this over my cellphone? I can watch TV on my phone so why would I want a wristwatch with text?

maybe because 99.9% of the cellphones users can't watch TV over their phone...

They can get text internet as well, and your point is moot... go to a cell phone store and pick yourself up a new phone. If you're still using a black/white LCD I'm going to laugh.

People living where mobile phones that can display TV can be bought are also likely to be living where TVs can be purchased, what moron would buy a Phone with TV capabilities when they could get a large widescreen TV instead? Try think your argument out. Here's a simple reason, because there's a market for it.
