Win Informant reports on one of the biggest issues facing Microsoft's enterprise customers today: Patch management, primarily because the company's many products all have their own tools and methods for providing software updates. The problem is exacerbated by the bewildering number of product revisions, language versions, and other product differentiators, many of which require the software giant to issue multiple patches for the same vulnerabilities. And finally, because many of its tools use different patch infrastructures, customers often see different results when they use products such as Windows Update (WU), Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA), Software Update Services (SUS), and Systems Management Server with the SUS Feature Pack. To fix these issues, the company is overhauling its patch management infrastructure and will unleash a new generation of patch management tools for its customers as soon as early 2004.

Oh sh1te, here comes Windows Patch Manager Server and Patch Manager Enterprise edition. Running as services they should only consume 400MB of memory. Soon we'll have Microsoft Mouse pointer Server.NET |

You know, strangely enough, I think Microsoft's patch distribution and KB is the best technical knowledge base about any product in the world. It's very detailed, very informative, very easy to use, and overly updated. Of course, this is coming from someone that is comparing it to the poorly english translated KBs available on many motherboard manufacturer websites. The one major advantage that MS has with their KB is that it's not organized by "FAQ". They don't force you to read an FAQ before accessing the KB. You can also search just by products AND keywords, not by product and common questions. Their KB is quick, to the point, and detailed. I like it. |
