Microsoft: Upgraded Motherboard = New Windows Licence

Microsoft recently made a change to the licence agreement saying that a new motherboard is equal to a new computer, hence you need to purchase a new Windows licence. Aviran's Place

Now thats bullshit. I've changed out 3 motherboards with my XP install, one because a mobo popped the capacators and shorted out the whole system. Now if that happens, I have to buy a new license? That's sure to piss off more than a few people who build their own systems.

I hate to rain on your parade, but this only applies to Microsoft OEM licence on your old computer.

They dont even cite a source for this statement. For all we know its just another MS hating bandwagon that everyone is blindly jumping on.

This statement sounds too stupid to really have come from microsoft. If it has then thats fine...anyone who types up a story like that should cite a source as proof. Yet they offer none.

I've formatted my install of XP a dozen or more times and I always call MS and they give me one over the phone. Of those formats, 2-3 were on new configs and virtually new machines.
MS figures that if you know enough to do your own install and you have either the knowledge or balls to call...they'll give you a pass code.

This is old news. All OEM versions of Windows XP has the license tied to the motherboard (Since 2002).

But I guess it is a good thing to remind people once in a while :)

Also if one replaces the motherboard under warranty because it has become defective, then it is okay to reuse the OEM license.
