Microsoft recently made a change to the licence agreement saying that a new motherboard is equal to a new computer, hence you need to purchase a new Windows licence. Aviran's Place

Now if that happens, I have to buy a new license? That's sure to piss off more than a few people who build their own systems.

This statement sounds too stupid to really have come from microsoft. If it has then thats fine...anyone who types up a story like that should cite a source as proof. Yet they offer none.

#64165 Posted on: 02/20/2006 07:21 AM I've formatted my install of XP a dozen or more times and I always call MS and they give me one over the phone. Of those formats, 2-3 were on new configs and virtually new machines. MS figures that if you know enough to do your own install and you have either the knowledge or balls to call...they'll give you a pass code.

#64170 Posted on: 02/20/2006 06:18 PM This is old news. All OEM versions of Windows XP has the license tied to the motherboard (Since 2002). But I guess it is a good thing to remind people once in a while
