NeoWin reports the European Commission have asked Microsoft to rename the media free edition after fears that the name would discourage people from purchasing the edition. The name is now unknown and Microsoft and EU officials are working together to come to an agreement on the new editions naming scheme.

I dont usually defend faceless corporations but i say good for Microsoft! The whole thing is pointless, the EU is wasting its time. Computers will just have all the missing..FREE.. bits installed by manufacturers anyway. MS are treating this with the contemp it deserves. The EU want all the media removed to improve competition.. how will it really? IE, OE, media player and the rest are free, 90% of the alternatives are free. If you want to play quicktime or real media you needd to install other apps anyway (also free) so whats the point? Id rather the EU went after companies who change your file associations them you install their products.. just like realplayer and quicktime as it happens! |
