NeoWin have found an article regarding a memory leak which occurs with SoundBlaster Live! device driver.
When you use the Microsoft Windows XP device drivers for the Creative SoundBlaster Live! audio adapter, a memory leak can occur. This can cause the computer to lose system resources and run more slowly.
This problem occurs with the SoundBlaster Live! device driver that is included with Windows XP.
A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem described in this article and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing at a later time, to further ensure product quality. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this fix.
NOTE: In special cases, charges that are normally incurred for support calls may be canceled, if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. Normal support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.
The English-language version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:
Creative SB Live! (WDM) - V. 5.1.2601.0
29-Aug-2001 15:58 5.1.2600.10 132,864 Portcls.sys i386
29-Aug-2001 15:57 5.1.2600.10 528,768 Portcls.sys Itanium 64-bit
The fix can be found at the windowsupdate.microsoft.com site for all those who have Live! cards
Also, being nosy, I also observed the existance of a new keyword :- "kbWinXPpreSP1fix", oh goodie!

I have a soundblaster live card. Could this issue be what´s causing these error messages: "Irq not less or equal", "Machinechk.exe" and "Pagefault in nonpaged area" ? |

I have IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL BSODs in both W2K and XP, but much more frequently on XP. I use Creative Labs driver version 3512 on both systems, but my PORTCLS.SYS on XP is certainly 5.1.2600.0 and not the fixed 5.1.2600.10. |
