With a support note quietly posted to its Web site, Microsoft confirmed what enthusiasts have long feared: Users who purchase Upgrade versions of Windows Vista will not be able to perform clean installs of the operating system. Instead, they will need to first install their previous OS and then upgrade in-place to Vista. Read on at WinItPro Update: Warp2Search User Cuke2u reports that there is a workaround to install an Update Version of Vista clean and smooth:

HI, actually there is a way around this if you still have a qualifying OS. What you do is clean install of vista without using a CD Key and unticking 'activate immediately'. Then you can perform an upgrade to vista as per normal and choose clean install...

I think is what he meant, is that there is no way to "boot from the CD" to do a fresh install. (example new hard drive).

You of course can do a "clean" install or "upgrade" off the media, however, if you have *NO* current operating system, the rumor is that you can't put in your Upgrade Disk and boot off it and install.

There were some posts on the Hardforums about this and I guess there are work-arounds, but they involve slipstreaming to make a new disk.
On the plus side, I guess the upgrade function more or less wipes the previous OS install and dumps all of the system files into a directory you can delete. It's not the best, but it's something. The only catch is you'd still have to go through and wipe all of the useless XP stuff the OS puts on there by default.
