Microsoft has responded with an explanation for the missing 7GB of Xbox 360 hard drive space, following our story yesterday; only 13GB of the 20GB drive is available to users.

Exactly the same with the original Xbox drive. Areas designated for games to use and others for updates and such. Is this a suprise? ... and who actually cares how much of the drive you can use? Who has even close to 12gb of user content on their 360? I doubt there is anyone out there. |

The system has been out for 3 weeks and I only have 11GB left. I own all of a whopping 3 games in addition to the Kameo demo and the Billiards and Hexic arcade games. I don't even have any MP3's on my system at all. I deleted the default ones. Nobody's likely filled it right now, but once we see more demos showing up that are 1GB or more...it's not going to be "no big deal" any longer. MS is just going to turn around and sell something bigger and better next year. Bill Gates himself said that we're going to see the end of optical disks soon and the Xbox 360 is the first step. Pretty tough to download a whole game when a 1-level demo for Kameo is over half a Gig. |

After reading their response it seems quite evident that the HDD is a pretty important part of the 360. So what were they thinking with the core unit? How is it supposed to function at the same caliber?? If a developer designs a game to take full advantage of the caching, the core unit we have to take a performance hit. |

Its going to be extremely expensive if he wants to end optical drives with a laptop sized hard drive... 100gb laptop drive is what 150-200$? 500gb normal factor is not much more than that.. with much better performance. |

That is because all the physics engine and information from the game itself is there. Downloading more levels only takes the map and NEW characters info, which can be much less information. Plus you can play level 1 while leeching level 2 |

There are 2 bundles and one doesn't come with the HD at all, the "core" package." In order to save games for it - you'll need a memory card. It also won't be able to download much of the XBox live content like demos or videos. The hard drive is needed for Xbox1 compatibility. Typically when you run a game for the first time, it goes online to access the executable needed to run the game. To top it off - you'll need the hard drive for some games like Final Fantasy XI and likely more and more titles. From what I've seen locally, the core packages are selling 1 to 1 with the accessories from the other package :P From what I've seen (in only 3 weeks) my HD is almost 1/2 full with minimal use and deletion of anything I download and don't need. I'd *guarantee* we'll see a larger HD for sale next summer at the latest. Right now for additional space you'd need more HD's...with no way to copy files between them! |

Simple, developers are not allowed to rely on the harddrive like they were on the original Xbox. Every game should function exactly the same harddrive or not. That's what MS is telling developers. The exception to this could be for instance future MMO-type games which could be "HDD-required" for obvious reasons. And of course... there will come a day in the future where they'll probably say to developers that they can make games that require the harddrive. My guess is that something like that would happen closer to the "end" of the system. |

First off, I highly doubt there will be many demos reaching sizes of 1gig even. Even if so though... I still don't see the problem. Who would keep 10+ demos around for any period of time? |
