Memtest86 3.3 has been released! Here's what's new: support for additional chipsets, changed Modulo 20 test (#8) to use a more effective random pattern rather than simple ones and zeros, an advanced menu option to display SPD info (only for selected chipsets), updated CPU detection for new CPUs, bugfixes.
Memtest86 is thorough, stand alone, OS independent memory test for x86 architecture computers. BIOS based memory tests are only a quick check and often miss many of the failures that are detected by Memtest86. It creates a bootable diskette, so all you need to run the test is to boot from that floppy. The testing will start automatically, and will run indefinitely, until the ESC pressed.
