Logitech MX518 Gaming Mouse

Posted by: Newsfactory on: 03/18/2005 12:27 AM [ Print | 9 comment(s) ] · 2662 views

TechGage have thrown up their review of Logitech's new MX518 gaming mouse! Here's a snip.

Are you a hardcore gamer that still uses the basic, bland mouse? Are you looking to add improvements to your gameplay, so you don't look like a noob online? Logitech's MX510 Series of mice are great, but they looked to improve it even more, by adding the ability to change the DPI on the fly.

You keep mentioning DPI? What is it? Simply put, the lower your DPI (Dots Per Inch), the slower your cursor moves on the screen. The higher the DPI, the quicker. At lower DPI, such as 400, it will give you the best precision, which is awesome in games like Counter-Strike, where you are not constantly jumping and hopping all over the place. Rather, you hunt and plan your fatal blow.

Good mouse from what I've seen, but if you have an MX1000 laser mouse...there's no reason to switch to this one.

Link works here, and why not just get the Razer Diamondback instead it has been out for a while, and the MX518 seems to be a copy of that design. The Diamondback has on-the-fly sensitivity too and is also 1600 DPI.

Any wireless mice is limited when it comes to gaming, like the MX1000. A wireless mouse has a sample rate of 125Hz = 8ms and it can't be changed.
Wired mice can be tweaked to use much better sample rate of 250Hz=4ms, 500Hz = 2ms or even 1000Hz = 1ms, it is much smoother after you run at e.g. 500Hz than before.

I would never get a wireless mouse for gaming as I play FPS games, the MX1000 is just a overhyped mice in new coating, nothing new, but people see the word 'laser' and they are hooked and buying into the frenzy without even consiering altertives with better hardware like the Razer Diamondback which is the best mouse for gaming at the moment in ways of hardware and features.

I've been playing FPS games for years - since the original Doom and I think a lot of this sample rate BS is just hype to start with.
If you're a good player you can play with a stock 2 button CompUSA PS2 mouse and win. IF you're a poor player, you can give them the MX518 or any of the Razor mice and they're not going to do any better.
I got the MX1000 because it's got a LOT of buttons which is convenient, my cats go after wires, and it feels very precise.
I've been playing FPS games for a LONG time and I don't really feel much difference between this mouse and a stock Intellimouse Explorer, which is actually the choice for a most pro players. If anything this is a little more precise.
I guess if you're anal and have to use a constantly tweaked sample rate...so be it.

I agree with you 100%... I have the mx510 and the mx1000 and I play Q3 and UT2K4... Q3 is by far the fastest moving game when it comes to FPS and there is absolutely no difference in gameplay for me from the mx1000 or the mx510. I did have the razer but they are basically overpriced junk. If Im gonna pay that amount for a mouse it better have more then 2 damn buttons on it.

As you said if you are a good player any mouse will fit your needs and I guess the ones that are not... well they need these so called 'gaming mice'. I prefer the mx1000 for the precision in gaming along with the amount of buttons and the ease of no cord to mess with.

Looks like I am the only one who doesn't really like gaming with the MX1000..

I will have to do more configuring and see if I can get better used to it.
