Old news for Double-Layer drives. Sony will have their drive out in about a month. The Sony will be $220 though so the Lite-on will be a steal if it is ~$160. |

If you read the article or knew about a website called "Google" then you wouldn't be asking that question. Retail DVD movies have been dual-layer for quite a long time and this is the first dual-layer consumer technology. It adds a second layer to the DVD media and essentially doubles the capacity of the drive to 8.5gigs from your regular 4.7 gigs. It will be playable in most set-top DVD players and DVD-ROMs. |

DoubleLayer = means twice the data on a disc. Store bought movies can hold up to something like 8.5GB whereas today's DVD+R or DVD-R hold only 4.7GB. When you run dvdxcopy it takes the 8.5gb movie and reencodes the movie to fit in a smaller 4.7gb disc, thus the quality is greatly reduced but you get your movie all on one disc everytime. With a double layered burnable DVD, you could copy a store bought movie 100% including the menu and special features, with absolutely no quality loss. This can be done today with specialty software but requires two single layred discs. Backing up data onto a single 8.5gb disc is more attractive then having two 4.7gb discs too. Double layered just means twice the size on one side, and double sided means there's data on each side. A double layered double sided disc would hold 8.5gb on each side for a total of almost 18gb. Note: 8.5gb is an approximation, Im not sure the exact number of usable data for the new double layered specs, but its close to 8.5 |
