Linux 3D AGP GPU Roundup: More Cutting Edge Penguin Performance

High performance gaming on Linux certainly isn't for everyone. We spent weeks preparing for this analysis and we still ran into problems that we could not correct. So many times, we came to a solution for a problem only to find our Linux distribution had some files in a slightly different place or our file dependency tree was completely broken. These are the things that scare away people from Linux. Although customizing our own system, contravening the Microsoft "monopoly" and roughing-it-on-our-own were refreshing and challenging, this editor immediately fired up the Tribes: Vengence demo on Windows after the Linux testing and editing were complete. Total time to install and configure: 5 minutes, 40 seconds; now that was refreshing. More at AnandTech

Finally, a "big name" website has some numbers to show how much ATi's Linux support blows. Their driver updates arn't really updates they just add rudimentary support for their latest cards. Who knows when ATi will fix any of the million bugs present in Linux. They hardly get around to fixing Windows bugs.

Not to mention they noticed that Linux didn't give spectacular results compared to Windows, and in some cases decreased performance considerably. About time some website did this.

Not to burst your Anti-Linux hate bubble but if you look at the games actually compiled for Linux you will find that they are on par... only the games done through Wine are slower and that's self-explanatory. Compare UT2004 on Linux to UT2004 on Windows. nVidia's numbers are the same... ATi's numbers have a difference of about half the FPS on Linux. Sad.

.....
ati doesn't even get to fix the most simple bugs ... like the 160+ Hz bug when installing their driver without monitor .inf
hell how stupid must a driver be not to start with 60Hz ???

"On Par" isn't even a good enough reason for most people to completely reinstall the OS, completely relearn the last 8-10 years of their computer usage, etc etc.

That's the reality of the situation :) Back in the day it made a difference, as Quake 2 using SVGALIb and MesaGL ran pretty damn good with the voodoo2 under linux compared to Windows....but the recent years of advancements of video cards and DirectX functions in Windows have made it a far superior gaming platform.
