Here's a random question for anyone on W2S...what *is* the opinion of WMC edition in general? Most new machines come bundled with it and charge an extra $100 for XP Pro (which I own...but I'd like to save myself a week of reformatting and re-installing). Looking at specs from Dell and Alienware, it's cheaper to buy pre-built machines from them than to upgrade my current machine with a-la-carte components. Does it perform just like XP? Any issues with the UI? I'm guessing it's just a skinned/stripped XP...but is that all? |

MCE is just Windows XP Pro. Nothing taken out, just with an application extra which is similer to Meedio or any other "media center" apps. I'm using it right now on my HTPC plugged into my 32" LCD. The application itself is pretty cool, but not a million miles away from other competitors applications such as Meedio. |

I have pro and MCE too. In the shops they were selling Pro for £130 and MCE for £100 OEM versions. Basically thou, Windows XP MCE is windows XP Pro, with a few extra bells and whistles. But for performance wise, it feels like my PC is more slughish with MCE installed, and for what MCE offers, I just think it has a long way to go. I'm not sure of the URL of this software called MediaPortal, but if u google it, u should find something on it. Its currently at version 0.2 and far as I can tell, it does pretty every thing MCE does and u won't need to reformat. Alternatively, if u can get hold of the Logitech Media Mouse or Logitech Mouse Keyboard combo pack with remote, the S510 I think, it comes with a sort of Home Theater software called MediaLife. It will allow u to watch Video files, Media like MP3s, slide shows and a few other things. It not free, or avalable from their site as a download, but if u can get hold of it, it is worth considering. |

Good to know. In reality, I'm just looking at buying a new PC and saw that they're typically coming with it these days. I don't really even need the functionality from it, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't really missing something, too. In reality...I might even hold off for Vista, though. With the actual consumer betas coming out in the fall...I might just get the most stripped OS I can and just wipe it and put Vista on it instead. |
