Irresponsibly Ripping Apart Windows

Posted by: Newsfactory on: 06/08/2007 07:28 PM [ Print | 10 comment(s) ] · 3031 views

There are some people out there apparently so smart they think they can do things better than programmers at Microsoft. These hacks irresponsibly recommend ripping out components of Windows to make 'lighter' versions with absolutely no clue as to the consequences of their actions. They mislead others and cause untold amounts of headaches for support staff of PC and software vendors.

I've been dealing with end user support for a very long time and have consistently found the most obscure problems to be user induced. Whether the end user mindlessly overclocked, applied useless mythical 'tweaks' or the current trend of irresponsibly and dangerously ripping out core components of their operating system you can be sure of who will be blamed first when there is a problem, Microsoft.

Irresponsibly Ripping Apart Windows

Microsoft programmers believe it or not include the files they do for a reason. The components they recognize as safe to remove can be done so through the add or remove programs option in the control panel. The rest should not be removed unless you can verify with the programmer who added it that it is safe to remove on your system. These 'hacks' who recommend these 'light' builds or ripping our core components have done no such thing. They have no idea what applications, components or features of Windows require which files let alone third parties. They have no idea of the full consequences of removing component 'X'. If they claim they do they are either fools or lying...

That is quite a tasteless article. They need to STFU and let people strip shit out if they don't want it. How many that use nlite and other utilities actually use tech support? Seriously.

And yes, I bet there's a number of people who are smarter than M$ (like it is really that hard lol, their OSes suck more dick than a crack whore).

I can strip shit all day, can it really be worse than a "normal installation". I go through installs like it's going out of style, and that's with no funny tricks. The code sucks either way. He needs to get the ***** over it or quit his goddamn job, b/c no one cares what he thinks about modified installs.

So, if it sucks so bad, why bother using/stripping/installing it in the first place? Do you really want their 'sucky' OS that bad?

Also, if no one cares about what he thinks, you sure take alot of time explaining how much you care about it...

I didn't bother reading it but found the comment rather harsh regardless of what it says.

Microsoft programmers believe it or not include the files they do for a reason.

What reason did they have for including Movie Maker? Program FilesXerox? Pinball? Hearts?
Branding was their reason.
It's useless to me. I don't need a kernel programmer to tell me that.

Then there are things like image viewer, zip folders, Media Player, Outlook Express, etc.
All done better by third-party programs.

And there are very BAD ideas like administrative shares, remote assistance, and UPNP. Not for me, thanks.

In any case, I really don't see a lot of people calling for support on their custom nLite installs.
They're far more likely to get support in public forums.

If you dislike MS that much why bother with their OS plane and simple don't use it. I had a model A car too, it didn't have electric windows so I traded it in for a newer version.

Relatedly, the ramblings provide absolutely no sources which back up his claims re: "headaches for support staff of PC and software vendors". Where are the data?

The core argument that you don't necessarily know the full implications of stripping Windows is fine, but the conclusions reached have absolutely no supporting evidence. Where are the data?

Sources cited (ironically) talk of issues likely to be encountered by removing certain files, but how does that translate into a mass of support problems for others? Where are the data?

What a MASSIVE surprise, I knew 2 seconds in who wrote this article. Yes, that's before I even clicked on the read more link. Please, go away popular technology. While you're at it take cooltechzone with you.

I think I'll turn the tables on your little turd of an article here. I would like to ask you, Mr. obviously bitter and cynical computer tech, how exactly did you learn the skillset required of you to lend such support. I'm going to guess most of it was by trial and error, I think I'd probably be right in assuming that. Oh wait, I forgot, you're better than everyone else. It must've come to you in a dream. Either that or you're really bad at what you do.

You may have a point that certain applications which allow modification of your operating system are a little too prevalent and perhaps skimp a little on the details of what they do. However, just because some people don't have a damn clue what they're doing does not mean you throw the baby out with the bath water. Slamming an entire enthusiast community because some idiot end user decided to axe something they needed is just plain stupid. It sort of makes you look like a fool...
