I've just read on X-Bits labsthat Intel is planning to use "Performance Ratings" for their processors :
Hit read more .
Snip from X-Bit Labs:-"Paul Otellini, the president of Intel Corporation, confirmed at IDF that the company will start using a kind of rating for their future processors. It is now officially stated that the biggest CPU-manufacturer in the world will introduce another metrics apart from the core-clock speed. Nowadays Intel with its flagman Pentium 4 processor is ?ahorse?. The working frequencies of the Pentium 4 processor with its long pipeline grow really fast, and this feature is an indisputable trump of Intel. However, in case of CPUs based on other architectures the company may find out that their working frequencies appear considerably lower than those of Pentium 4 CPUs even though their performance will be higher. Wouldn't this be a bad Idea for Intel since clock for clock AMD is faster. I mean AMD uses performance rating for this reason. Intel would have a 2.0 Ghz peformance rating of what like 1600. |

What people don't understand is that Intel's performance rating is using to sell their chips against their own chips. They're not trying to 'lie' to the industry about their product, in fact, this does make perfect sense. Say, a Banias 1.6 with a 4 hour battery life, versus a Banias 1.6 with 1,2,3,5 hour battery life....how would you sell that? It makes sense to do it this way. The problem with AMD's PR is that they're still basing their performance rating on clock speed alone, so it's getting us nowhere. They're trying to sell their product....Intel, on the other hand, is trying to explain how a 1.5Ghz Banias with 1MB L3 can outperform a 1.6Ghz P4-M..... Remember, these are laptop chips....laptops sell on cpu frequency, not on the amount of performance it has.... |

And what about Intel cheting in benchmarks! and threatening companys that want to use AMD |
