Just spotted this bit of Info at Futuremark's Forum posted by jfitzw!
I dont know about any file that will change it other than bootvis, which never worked for me. one guarunteed way to get faster boots, is to change the prefetch options. do this
start > run > type regedit > navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > Current control set > Control > Session Manager > Memory Management > Prefetch Parameters. change the value in EnablePrefetcher from 3 to 5. reboot and watch the faster speed.

This tweak and the cpu l2 cache tweak are nothing new. If you have read the various WinXP tweak guide, you would get more info. including any side-effects and stuff. |

Setting the prefetch to 5, I believe will enable prefetching for application launch, but will disable boot prefetching. If so, that is a bad choice. First of all, prefetching applications isn't needed for most 7200 RPM hard drives. If you disable the prefetching for boot, then all you are doing is getting through the WindowsXP scroll bar quickly, but then your kernel and start applications will take twice as long to boot once the GUI is loaded. In otherwords, you will be able to boot past the welcome screen quicker, but the kernel and apps will take much longer to load. That's not a good trade off to me. I'd rather have my screen take a few seconds longer at the welcome screen, and then have the kernel and GUI load quicker. I guess it is a matter of preference. |

well what side affect could this have? what kind of problems could this bring up on my comp by doing this "tweak"? |

The L2 cache "tweak" is a placebo. This is determined via the HAL, although with older CPUs with off-die L2 Cache this may not be the case. Basically its for Pre-Pentium 2 CPUs. For what I'd hope would be everyone here this is a completely useless "tweak" to make, there's absolytely no point to it. |

0 means Windows auto-determines it. So what the guy's saying on the forum about Windows 2000 & XP not detecting it is just wrong. |

Made mine boot slower. It did not load all the startup items either until I set it back to 3. |

9 also has the same effect as 1 or 5. In binary all these numbers end with 01 which means disabling boot pefetching. |
