Hotmail Vs Gmail?

Posted by: Newsfactory on: 11/02/2004 01:37 PM [ Print | 8 comment(s) ] · 4154 views

I don't know if I'm being a little paranoid so I'll you decide. A friend of mine has a Gmail account, and after showing it me at work, I decided I wanted one too, 1Gb of storage is not to be sniffed at compared to the paltry 2Mb on offer at Hotmail.

So my friend fired off an acceptance email to my hotmail account so that I could set up my Gmail, (every Gmail account holder can invite 5 people to join Gmail). Imagine my horror that after 6 years of uninterrupted use, my hotmail inbox was mysteriously wiped out that same afternoon, everything was gone, including my old A+ and N+ exam result emails, (yeah I know but I kept them for nostalgia!) Of course I sent off an email to hotmail's "support" this was met with Micorsoft's now copyrighted silence. So is it just a coincidence? Or is it something more sinister?

Strange that your email account got wiped. Obviously you must have used it within 30 days.
I've never had any problems with my hotmail account.
Also I'd like to point out, my account was automaticaly upgraded to 250meg from 2 meg. I didn't notice until a few months ago, so i'm not sure when it happened. I have a free account.
I haven't tried Gmail yet as theres no email service i would trust 1 gig worth of important backups with ;-)

Strange indeed!
My account is free, I never upgraded it, they gave me the extra space. Maybe an error on MS part.

Wow guys sorry!
I must've gotten lucky somehow.
I thought maybe the 250meg account was an upgrade to compete against larger services. Ooops!

In light of this, then Gmail certainly is a good alternative to hotmail, if the majority is still stuck with 2 meg accounts.

users are getting upgraded at random. People have not yet found a pattern in upgrading, but eventually, everyone should get an upgrade.
