A user called arnezami has busted the copyprotection of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.
He has worked out a way of extracting the processing key from a high-def DVD player.
Previous hacks of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD involved extracting the "volume keys" for each disc which is harder work.

The latest hack, by a person who claims to be abloke who goes by the handle of arnezami, builds on work done by Muslix64 and extends it -- now you can break all AACS-locked discs.Although the AACS DRM took years to develop, and cost billions to design, it was broken in weeks for practically no cost. More here.

That's not entirely correct. The AACS encryption itself has not been cracked. But it has been bypassed completely by extracting the keys. It's like coming to a locked door and finding the keys under the door mat. The lock was not tampered with in any way. In Arnezami's case he found the masterkey, that unlocks not just one particular HD-DVD , but all of them. |

Perfect analogy, Ceejay. And not surprising at all. In the digital world of bits and bytes there is no such thing as perfect security or protection. |
