Website Spong posted that we may have to face an unpleasant change in the way we know gaming. Right now we are all PC gamers. If it comes to what they outline there will soon be Nvidia and ATI gamers. Spong claims to have learned from insiders that Valve Software is currently investigating to make Half-Life 2 exclusive to Nvidia hardware. Half-Life was originally published in 1998 and brought innovations to the genre still referred to today.
Spong also reports that both chipmakers have been in negotiations with game developers for such exclusivity deals for quite some time. More details are said to be revealed at this years E3. BTW this story was posted on April 2nd, 2003.

"most ATI 9700 and 9800 owners will buy the nv35 for sure this summer" lol dont count on it... the R400 isnt on ice either. and shouldnt we stop hyping the nv35 in light of the utter disappointmen that was nv30? ati has a small marked share? last diagram i saw was before the r300 where nvidia had a bit more than 50%, ATI had 30 something and the rest was other vendors. I believe that has changed a lot since r300 and specificly the 9500 nonpro. |

Let's just imagine that another major title - for example Duke Nukem Forever will be ATI exclusive....and so on. Nightmare. |

"ATI Has Rendermonkey" "ATI Follows standards" What standards are they following? The ones set forth by Microsoft? And what advancements in games have we had since Microsoft has been setting DirectX standards? I still don't see games that use pixel shaders. All we see are games that use the 'standard' pathways for everything, why? Because both ATI and Nvidia hardware do things a little bit differently from eachother. The fact is, Nvidia's GF-FX is very powerful with specially optimized pathways, Valve can create a great environment and beautiful scenery with these optimized pathways. The game would perform as powerful as it can with these optimized pathways, and pixel shaders can be aplenty with Cg. Another fact is, ATI's R9x00 is very powerful with optimized pathways. Valve can create a great environment and beautiful scenery with these optimized pathways. The game would perform as powerful as it can with these optimized pathways, and pixel shaders can be aplenty via the usage of their RenderMonkey. The inconveniencing thing is that each card's optimized pathway requires a specific vision of how the game will eventually look, feel, and play. It's virtually double the work having to use these pathways, and it's double the work having to test this hardware. On the negative side about ATI, it could be far more work for the game developers to create/modify the engines they're using for their games because there might not be a certain item or feature in ATI drivers, or it might be a bug. John Carmack has spoken on this a long while ago. Not everyone has a 3d engine god of a programmer to work on their games, either. It can shorten development time for these huge ass, beautiful, brand new games, if the game companies simply released for specific types of hardware. Not to mention, why should game developers use DirectX 9 if the hardware exceeds the abilities of DirectX? Since when does Microsoft dictate exactly what game companies should and shouldn't do? There are a lot of pros and upsides to this. If you don't like it, tough shit. I think the game, in the end, would be far better than what would be. |

first, your market share source is wrong. Nvidia does own about 70% of the whole market. second, this has changed less than one could expect considering the success of ATI the last few months. and finally, ATI has just released their R350 core, don't expect an announcement of the R400 before Fall this year just take this survey from last year and you will notice that nvidia owns 62.5% of the gamers (for Half-Life which is the most popular game, now isn't it I'm pretty sure that almost all hardcore gamers which own a 9700 or 9800 will switch over to the nv35 since it will be the standard for game performance the moment it arrives in stores... |

If this is true, I'd boycott both Valve and nVIDIA för life, and I won't be alone. |

Ok people let me make this very clear. "It ain't going to happen!" While Nvidia owns a huge market share of 3D accelerators, don't forget that they only make up a good 30% to 40%. That still means that Vavle would lose over 60% of possible users. Most likely the rumor went around, and probably got screwed up. Probably Nvidia specific features will be Nvidia exclusive. What features? I don't know, but it will probably be for Geforce FX. Even that would be a pretty sad attempt on Nvidia. The biggest problem is OpenGL. ATI and Nvidia have allowed themselves to make video card specific instrunctions to boost gaming performance. Direct 3d now has it's place in 3D gaming as it doesn't chose sides like OpenGL. Unless OpenGl 2.0 fixes these problems, I don't see how it could get better. The "Way it's meant to be played" logo is starting to really piss me off. I am a ATI card owner, but I don't plan to always own a ATI card. What ever is cheaper and better is what I go for. If it's not a Radeon 9700, Geforce FX then it could be a SIS Xabre, or S3 Delta Crome. It just so happens ATI has the better buy at the moment, and the cards are in store shelves. Unlike Geforce FX. |

well even without the nv35 vavle will have the most potential buyers while choosing nvidia. They still own more than 60% of the market. The rest being divided between ATI, Matrox an other "smaller" graphiccard manufactures like Intel themselves... |

As I understand it... Unreal engined games still ship with the OpenGL renderer, but it is not 'officially' supported, and I very much doubt it will be developed further in the future. |

that would be really stupid considering the success HL1 had and the excellent gaming experience it offered, I would rather buy HL2 and a nvidia card then boycott both companies |

So far, nVidia isn't confirming the slightest bit about games that will be made for ATI or nVidia soley. Might as well forget this article made by that site obviously looking for a large story. After I get one more email, I will post what nVidia officially says. |

of course this is bull nvidia owns 40% or whatever of the market you say? like what maybe 10% would be gf 4 4200 and up? probably less. GF FX will be like 1% or some shit most of the cards people have now are gf2mx or gf4mx thats what they get there 40% from not the high end cards |

ROFL, that survey still takes in mind my over year (maybe year and half) or so old entry (with nVidia card these times) so it's TOTALLY useless (old values) ... better to look at Futuremark list of hardware (ya i know nVidia owners will whine about it etc) ... |
