Posted by: Newsfactory on: 08/03/2004 03:03 PM [ Print | 17 comment(s) ] · 2450 views

Fido over at The Inquirer reports that Gigabyte has hit out at its competitor Asus accusing of it cheating on 925X/915X scores.

The allegation is that Asus 925X/915P series moteherboards score much higher in some 3D graphics performance tests. In a media release, Gigabyte said "we have found that Asus has been doing some cheating". Gigabyte claims that "out of curiosity" it tested the Asus PSAD2 Premium board and discovered a setting called Peg Link Mode.

Why's that, they make good quality boards, and I've never had one DOA unlike Asus.

Man, some people.

First off. Dead motherboard on arrival does not necessarily imply the manufacturer. Boards are made, packaged, shipped from one end of the world to the other over so many various mediums it's not funny.

With that said. What is wrong with adding a few extra performance modes here and there? They're just pissy because their R&D team didn't think of it first.

It's An Aimbot

CheaterS!!!!!!!

Asus & Gigabyte Both make excellent Motherboards And Video Cards. Never had a problem with both companies.

When people say this and that sucks
1 they live @ home with mama

2 They know two things about there computers
Jack & Shiat

3 They ask mama to buy em new parts.

I recently bought two Gigabyte motherboards... one was dead from the start. The other worked perfectly for a week, however then that too died.

Best motherboards? I for one will never, ever, be touching another one of these again.

I have to admint I had 2 gigabyte boards aswell. one had problems with graphic cards and on the other one an alternator or something like that went up in flames, yes in flames. thank god there was nothing near that would have burnt well.

Before that my friend had a gigabyte board which never worked at all.

It's not that they try to boost performance that is at the heart of the accusation here. The accusation is that ASUS is attempting to surreptitiously attain higher 3D benchmark scores through the false impression that nothing about the 3D subsystem had been overclocked. A great deal of gamers and the like do base their purchases off benchmarks, especially if the feature set offered by comparable motherboards are almost identical.

If ASUS is going to create a new "Peg Link" feature, all the more power to them. But then you can't compare apples and oranges in a 3D benchmark test.

This is not solely applicable to Gigabyte. From the likes of the article, it seems that Gigabyte speaks on behalf of all non-ASUS manufacturers when it complains about ASUS' unfair practice.

From what the article says, ASUS is not disclosing the use of overclocking the 3D graphics system. Gigabyte had to test ASUS' motherboard and find the feature themselves. Gigabyte is accusing ASUS of trying to pass off the 3D performance edge as a matter of superior motherboard design.

"[It] is misleading to the public, seeks an unfair means to gain an advantage over the competition, and frankly sets a bad example which competitors may be forced to follow" - The Inquirer, Aug 3, 2004

To get around this Asus tweak, all you need is an Nvidia PCI-E board with HSI chip as "PEG Link Mode" is only available to PEG native boards which implement "PEG Control Modes". Fortunately NV41/43 will be PEG native.

I hope that this option is switchable via the BIOS, as I'd hate for an AIB to determine the speed of my devices/buses etc without my knowing...
