GeForce 8900 Has 160 Shader Processors ?

Posted by: [NT] on: 02/14/2007 01:02 PM [ Print | 5 comment(s) ] · 1550 views

VR-Zone reports that GeForce 8900 GTX has more shaders and this will speed up some of the games and definitely in the "scientific" GPGPU calculations. The card still has the same G80, 90nm core but NVIDIA might be veiling some info. The card will be announced just in time to spoil the ATI's fun with R600 launch.

Its kinda funny how Nvidia needs to beef up their card this much just to compete with ATi. But it is known ATi cards have been superior every single time, just look at Radeon 8500 which crushed the geforce 3, then the 9800 which killed the FX. Then the x1900 series which where actually a step above nvidia for sure as they sport the 48 pixel units vs the 7800 GTX's weak 24. The same thing is gonna happen again here, ATi's card will be superior to nvidia 8800/8900 cards as they always have been. Plus you have nvidia's shotty vista drivers to top it all off. Then again ATi have always had the best driver support too.

Also have to look at it this way though, ATi makes their own cards and develops the drivers on them. Nvidia on the other hand dont make their own cards so there.

Its kinda funny how ATi needs to beef up their card this much just to compete with Nvidia. But it is known Nvidia cards have been superior every single time, just look at Geforce3 Ti500 which crushed the radeon 8500, then the 6800 which killed the 9800 and the x850 because ATi didn't know that time how to make ps3.0 card. Then come 7800 series and Ati still don't know how to make ps3.0 card which where actually a step above ATi for sure as they sport the 24 pixel pipelines vs the x1800 weak 16. Then game the 7950GX2 witch was fatest card before the mighty 8800GTX , in mean time ATi finally was able to make sm3.0 card, but now they didn't know how to put to two gpu's to one pcb. The same thing is gonna happen again here, Nvidia's card will be superior to ATi R600 cards as they always have been. Plus you have ATi's shotty vista drivers to top it all off. Then again Nvidia have always had the best driver support too.

It's completely irrelevant how many shader processors a card has or at which speed it is running. What is important is the performance of the card in the end and this totally depends on the architecture used.

Some architectures need higher clockrates to be able to compete, other need more shader processors. Who cares? In the end only speed and power useage/heat dissipation counts and ATI is certainly losing the last part.

It's funny to see how late ATI is this round. Their new card will be able to beat nvidia 6 months-old card but nvidia will have already a second generatioun DX10 card out by that time. The R600 will have to measure itself against the 8900GTX and not the 8800GTX. It's not nvidia's mistake that ATI is late.

I was kinda leaning to that, i know that the r600 will have infect less shaders then the 8800, but will blow it out of the water because ATi is abloe to achieve the same with less, always has.
Why does nvidia need 190 shader units to keep up? Why no onboard physics unit?
