Future for Vista Looks Bleak, but Where's Linux?

With Microsoft taking a beating because of Vista's problems and delays, it is time for desktop Linux to step up and experience some considerable growth. Right now, with Vista and Microsoft garnering very low approval ratings, desktop Linux providers need to be more aggressive about their marketing and get their message to concerned consumers. This should not be thought of as kicking Microsoft when it's down, but the fact remains that a lot of people, even dedicated MS fans, are disappointed with what they know about Vista and what they have been hearing about the company in general. This means it is an ideal time to present people with a viable option.

This is easy, the reason Linux still does not appeal to the general user is its lack of uniformity. But, it is also that same thing that appeals to the main Linux user base, customization. The basic user want everthing to be the same. I would assume this situation is why the Mac is becoming more popular. |

I don't understand your point. I think Windows is more popular becasue of games, superior support for hardware dedicated to run them and short learning curve. Oh and some people are forced to use Windows, because applications they need don't have ports to other operating systems/cpu architectures. Did I miss anything? Btw I'm die hard linux user ^,^ |

Yeah, you missed the most important detail of them all. Windows is "freely" (note the quotes) with most of the PC's you buy now and bought in the past. |

Hmm.. talk about drawing conclusions based on.... what? No idea how this ended up as news on the frontpage. Lack of real news perhaps? |

Agreed, this is the worst type of gossip, based on vapor.... Linux is a fine OS and I use it too, but frankly it will never appeal to the average guy and trying to make it so is pointless. |

Scyphe you have no clue do you? Well if you do some searching and find what MS said Vista would be and now look at what it is you find a real disappointment. And some of us do know what was said at the start of the beta and its not what happen. |

That still is no excuse for such a news entry. It's ridiculous. |

I wasn't particularly attacking the content of the "news"-item (which was more of a personal rant than anything worthy of being called "news"). Personal opinions just don't belong as news items. There's plenty of forums to use for that. |

Gaming is a very small part of the issue. Having 100's of different versions of linux (most with no version control) and the fact that its very hard to set up for a novice... lack of drivers..... lack of software that runs on it (compared to XP etc) are the main points... You do a great job of pointing ot the obvious, however in your exaltation of Linux, you forgot to mention that the sorce code and various programs for Linux has been written by just about everybody and anybody, and that Linux in it's wisdom failed to keep track of who wrote what program or parts thereof. They have not got "clue one" as to who wrote certain parts of thier programming. IBM recently got into Legal hot water over this very problem with Linux. So how are we supposed to put our faith in them and dump Microsoft? I think Not. Linux's other little trick is that it's fee all right but if you want add-ons that when you start paying. Whereas Microsoft created the product, set the standard by which everybody else is trying to catch up and continues to evolve and takes us along with them and you may rest assured that they at least know who wrote what and can refer to any part of any program and who the programmer was, at any given time. If your going to tout someting, may I suggest that you avail yourself of all the facts. Linux may be what some call an alternative to Microsoft, I do not. I will stick with what works and a firm that has proven itself over and over again. Put recap: linux sux0r .. just llike firefox |
