Firmware Fix For The Deskstar To Prevent A Deathstar

Storage Reviews reports that in January this year, IBM made available a firmware fix for their infamous "Deathstar" (Deskstar 75GXP and 60GXP) series of hard drives that supposedly significantly enhances the reliability of these drives by moving the heads around when they idle.

Anyone who has one of those drives should download the firmware update immediately to reduce the risk of hard drive failure and data loss.

I don't understand this. I've run the identification utility and it says my current firmware is ER6OA46A

It also says that update to ER6OA45A is required... but looks like mine is newer than that one... why do I have to put an older firmware (45A) if I've got a newer one (46A)???

I've never had any probs with this drive, I've had it for a year now. It's IC35L060AVER07-0.

I've had a DTLA307015 before and it died producing the same noise as the sound on that site. :(

Yeah, great, the HDD Drive Information (DTLA-307060 drive) program finds the drive and ASSURES me that it NEEDS (REQUIRED, it says) to be updated (to GA5AA), yet the combo DFT/Updater program tells me nothing needs to be updated and quits! Come on IBM, Hitachi, whoever you are, how about a DOS command line updater and a binary BIOS rom file??? Is that too much to ask before the drive dies?

Those firmwares were posted more than year ago.

Got a 307015 which works after a LLF but not for long, so I decided to used it as a secondary drive to dump downloads, Swap file and some stuff (what a waste). Also got a 307020 gone FUBAR.

D/L the file and I had the same problem, the damn program told me my firmware is up to date and quitted.

I agree, where's the comand line tool with a binary to make it ourselves?

Sakato,

That url is as useless as the update apps.

I've updated a lot of HDs (60GXP) using the update program ... I don't think that the apps are useless.

just IMHO.
