Ubi Soft sends along an AMD64 / WinXP Pro x64 upgrade for Far Cry along with an "exclusive content" add-on for the tropical island first-person shooter by Crytek Studios. Word on the massive downloads is: "The AMD64 upgrades of Far Cry are meant to run on the final released version of the new Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. If you are running a Beta version of this software, we cannot insure compatibility. Please note that the goal of the AMD64 upgrades is to transform the 32-bit version of the game into a 64-bit version of the game to be played on the Windows XP Pro x64 Edition OS.

Well, it's not "make or break" performance, but it's kind of cool to see them do something unique. Makes me wonder if someone can add the new visual improvements to the 32-bit version and somehow bench THOSE against the 64-bit OS to see how much that scales, too. I don't have anything that'll run it, but I appreciate the effort and look forward to the next generation of games doing fine/better in 64-bit. |

hmmmm 64bit is mainly a speed improvement there should be no visual effect that is not possible on 32bit thats just a methode to force ppl. upgrading I appreciate 64bit supprot but 64bit only is totally the wrong way for a 32/64bit game |

And this is only the beginning. Games designed from the ground up as 64 bit are on the way. All of you 32 bit cpu users, get on board with 64 bit or get left behind. |

64 bit expands the amount of memory that can be addressed and the size of a number that can be stored in memory. It allows for higher precision calculations to be done in less cycles than on 32 bit architecture- say on a 32 bit machine you have to do an operation involving a number higher than 2^32 (about 4 billion). This must be split up into several cycles, thereby using WAY more computing resources to handle the same problem that a 64 bit system can handle all at once. Sure, the 32 bit processor can run the same code, but in some cases, it may take ten times longer to execute. Hence the reason for the 64 bit version to have higher quality special effects. |
