eVGA is one of the first to market with a graphics card based on Nvidia's GeForce FX 5900 Ultra GPU, and it offers one feature that no one else has (for now at least): higher clock speeds! With video input support, it also boasts video editing capabilities. How does much faster is it, than the GeForce FX 5900 Ultra reference card, and how does it perform against ATI's Radeon 9800 Pro?
For their e-GeForce FX 5900 Ultra card, eVGA has bumped the core clock frequency to 500MHz. Yes, you read that correctly, 500MHz! As a result, the e-GeForce FX 5900 Ultra matches the fill rate of GeForce FX 5800 Ultra, arguably its biggest highlight. On top of the higher core clock speed, eVGA boosts the memory clock frequency to 900MHz. This feature nets the e-GeForce FX 5900 Ultra an additional 1.6GB/sec of memory bandwidth.

Both the FX5900 and the Radeon 9800 are fairly evenly matched in terms of performance (barring cheats, optimisations etc). I think it just comes down to other issues now. Image quality is still ATI's realm. Driver compatability is nvidias. Personally, i like the lower noise and heat of the ATI unit and so far ive had no driver problems. As thousands of people are discovering ATIs drivers have come a long way. |

IQ is a mixed bag. Concerning AA, ATI is the leader but when considering AF, the crown goes definitely to nvidia. Now even with the enhanced RAMDAC on all GF FXs, there is no clear winner in the IQ category... The noise problem is also a problem of the past, the new 5900s are as quiet as any Radeon, some even more silent (MSI). Performance-wise, yes the 9800 Pro and 5900 Ultra are on bar. Depending on the game/bench used the one or the other is faster but overall both perform the same. So, if you are willing to spend more to get better driver compatibility (in games as professional programs) go with nvidia otherwise choose ATI. |

Any chance of IQ goodness the fx5900 has is currently being waisted by bad drivers and terrible AA. The AF quality of the radeon isnt as good, but the overall quality is still higher. 2D is more than just ramdacs, the fx isnt as good. My radeon is nearly silent as well, the FX isnt in 3D mode, not by a long shot. The NV3X is tainted now, i wouldnt touch it. ATI's drivers are only 5% behind nvidias now, but by the end of the year they will be as good or better. There just isnt a killer reason to get an FX, unless you like EA games, in which case you deserve an FX. |

"There just isnt a killer reason to get an FX, unless you like EA games, in which case you deserve an FX." Pretty irresponsible and unnecessary comment... |
