It builds upon Java technology's cross-platform support and robust security model with new features and functionality, enhanced performance and scalability, and improved reliability and serviceability. Why is it 5.0 and not 1.5.0? They don't list 1.4.2 as just 4.2.

Well because it is a major update. There should have been a version 2, 3, and four a long time ago.

So now they finally decided to make it five so everyone knows its a major update. Not a minor. You know the whole version number bs. ;)

JRE: Java Runtime Environment - needed for running Java software.

JDK: Java Development Kit - includes JRE. Needed for developing Java software.

Now 200 PCs at my college have this "New updates are ready to be downloaded" tray icon. And it appears to all users while none of them wont even have permissions to install it. Thats even more annoying than their webstart feature.
