Doom III User Bench Comparison

Posted by: [PM] on: 11/04/2002 12:11 PM [ Print | 5 comment(s) ] · 2600 views

Robert Dhondrup a regular [H] reader submitted the following information regarding a test run on similiar Atlon XP systems with a) GeForce 4 Ti 4600 and b) Radeon 9700 Pro: Both PCs used Athlon 2100 XPs at 800x600. Since the alpha version of Doom3 had no working options menu, the only way to configure the game is by manually editing the .cfg files with Quake commands. WE SAW AN OPTION IN .CFG for the NV30 options to be turned on (coolness, eh?). The Radeon 9700 Pro drew a consistent ~50-60+ fps while the Ti 4600 was really straining, going from 12-15 fps to an occasional 30 fps. On some screens it went as low as 7 fps! Alpha is the keyword here and I guess in retail a Ti 4600 will do the job well enough for most people. Still NV30 is going to add to competition.

My bench results:

Athlon XP 1700@2000 (FSB 150)

Epox 8KHA+

512 MB PC2700

Geforce Ti4400

SB Live Value

Windows XP Pro / Detonator 41.03

25-30fps @640

20-22fps @1024

>... the Ti 4600 was really straining, going from 12-15 fps to an occasional 30 fps.

I don't know how my system is faster than a Ti4600 :S

My results:

Athlon XP 2100+@1820 Mhz
Geforce Ti4600
Asus A7V266-E
512 MB Ram
SB-Live Player 5.1
Win XP SP1
Detonator 28.32

Between 30 and 50 fps in scenes without monsters.
Break down to min 15 fps with monsters in scene.

I think this alpha is radeon-optimized, because ATI seems to leaked that file.

Anyway the grafx is the best I seen on my pc!

A little tip for everyone if you haven't checked yet, but look in doomconfig.cfg...

There is a command:

r_usestandardGL "0"

If that is 0, set it to 1 so you wont be in software rendering :p

Also, even with my Geforce4 Go (Mobile NV18), setting r_useNV20 "1" seemed to help my performance quite a bit.

software rendering? lol! there's no such thing in DOOM.

if you set r_usestandardGL to 1, you switch the bump mapping off, that's why it's faster then... switching dynamic shadows off might also help.

I cant stand all these news stories about the leaked alpha. Everyone is too damn impatient to wait for an official demo, so they go ahead and write news about benchmarks, reviews, and tweaks as if thats what it is.
Why the hell are benchmarks being run on an alpha!? I think carmack put it nicely by saying
"Making any judgements from a snapshot intended for a non-interactive demo is ill advised."
