DOOM III Could Be Delayed Due To Alpha Leak

Posted by: Newsfactory on: 11/06/2002 06:46 PM [ Print | 15 comment(s) ] · 3267 views

Darkvision.be reports that he has received another mail from 'someone from ID', that he really don't knows if he's real , or just a faker, but he's posting this because it's maybe true. Anyway here's the mail: Thanks for posting that. We have found out some more info about this recent situation. Apparently the people at Zelaron and Iownjoo are not new to the scene. They have members there that have been releasing information on our game as well as other games and seem to be a meeting place for some hardcore gamers. While we are not sure yet, we think they have some additional info and tools on the Doom 3 game, as well as other important information on other games in development.

We have tried contacting both of them but with no luck. I have been talking with several news sources in the past couple of hours about this and we are getting flooded with questions and such. If they have gotten some of the important development tools as suspected, development may be delayed on the game. We are in contact with other game companies and individuals who are constantly trying to figure out what's going on. In conclusion, it looks like this goes a lot deeper then we thought, and that the sites and individuals from these sites have a lot more then just the Doom 3 alpha demo.

I think everyone who downloaded the alpha can give themselves a big pat on the back for contributing to this. This also goes for W2S for posting about it all the time.

Cheers!

I think id should get their heads out of their collective asses and realize that this leak has done nothing more then create more publicity for their game.
If this were to happen to, say, a game like Duke Nukem Forever, some people may actually be inclined to believe that it may in fact still exist.

Or maybe Team Fortress 2, which is bigger vaporware than Duke Nukem 4.

If you are patient enough not to have downloaded it, then what's your problem? It's not like the game will be worse if they release it later than they planned...

personally, i don't want to wait. but i'll just have to, and it'll be worth it. :]

I cant stand you asses who preach about how much you love id software, but jump on any oppurtunity to download an unfinished and illegal alpha of their upcoming game.
Way to support the company eh?

My advice....get some ***** patience!
exedanni covered it nicely with his post.

NEEENER-NEEENER, NEEEEEEEEEE-NEEEEEEEEER!!!

And I'm hating how all these self-righteous geek types are harping on about their virtous ways and how all us "bad geeks" are spoiling it for the rest of ya.

Have ya noticed how many people are hunting trying to still get a hold of this thing, have you yourself REALLY not looked at it or some screenies?

At least I'm being honest about my attitude. I'll damned sure by the game when it comes out and I'm nothing but blown away by this sneak-peak and I plan to grab every last bit of Doom3 goodness that I can get my hands on to see what The Carmack's lates masterpiece is like!

Like I said, "NEEEEEEENER-NEEEEEEENER, NEEEEEEEEEEE-NEEEEEEEEEEEER!!!" :p

Yeah self-righteous I know, but I have respect enough for id software to realise downloading a leaked alpha is not what they want.

Imagine working your a$$ off for countless hours per day, making sure DOOM will be perfect when it is released, and woo everyone. Then someone goes and leaks it and thousands of fans download a half-finished version of it, look at your half-finished work and says "yeah it's not bad". My blood would be boiling.

Jyncus, nice so see someone agrees with me.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. If'n they don't want leaks, they really should have better security. I don't see how me downloading it or not is going to affect Id a whole lot except for me jumping up and down everywhere I can going "NEEENER-NEEENER" to all the self-righteous types and "OMFG, IS THIS INCREDIBLE OR WHAT?!?!" to all the gaming folks I know who are in to such things too.

I think the leak won't hurt Id one bit, and I really hope the guilty parties are found and caught on this one since I happen to respect The Carmack a great deal....but I really don't see the purpose in torturing myself by NOT taking a sneak peak at the game if I can.

It's me own moral choice that you're welcome to flame/knock/get all puffy-chested and self-righteous about some more, but I ain't got no quandries with it and will sleep very well tonight in spite of the guilt I should be wallowing in. :)

(Oh, and "NEEEENER-NEEEEEEENER, NEEEEEEE-NEEEEEER!!!!" :p )

Whoa whoa, hold your horses people. First of all, what this letter is saying is that some people could have gotten hold of "additional info and tools on the Doom 3 game". This has nothing to do with the leak that's lurking on P2P networks at the moment, and even if it does the Zerlaon/Iownjoo forums are where id thinks the Alpha appeared in the first place (which means they are in direct contact with ATI or whoever leaked the alpha). The alpha that's on Kazaa right now is not what's worrying id, although they are pissed off about it. The problem here is that the leaker is providing people with more than just the leaked demo.

Also, not only is id unsure whether or not the people on these forums do have extra tools/info on the game, but this might delay the game.

Frankly, I'm quite sure there's nothing to worry about. And even if there is, this is the leaker's fault, people who downloaded it have absolutely nothing to do with the fact that someone at ATI or wherever might be giving away things about the game.

Its people like you digitalwanderer who are so ignorant assuming everyone who downloads the alpha thinks the same way about it as you do.
I can assure you that not everyone who downloads it is going "Man this is awesome! I'm definatly gonna buy the full game when it comes out!"

It's already on Kazaa and thousands of newbies are downloading it, playing it, and saying
"WTF? The levels dont have any clip brushwork! Whats the deal with these textures!? Why cant I open the menu!? This game sucks!" Then they go off and tell all their friends about how messed and buggy the game is.
This is the reason ids probably so pissed off. Because people are too inpatient to wait for the full game, the entire surprise if spoiled, and blown off by the newbies who don't realize what an alpha is.

Son, please watch your P's & Q's...you might just be biting off a bit more than ya can chew.

I know damned well a lot of noobs are going around whining, screw 'em! They should know better than to expect ANY kind of warez/alpha/beta to be working right, and if'n they're all disappointed...well, piss on 'em!

Not a single damned one of them is going to hesitate for a second to buy the game when it comes out, it's going to be WAY to good/revolutionary/different for people to hesitate buying it due to a sh&tty alpha leak.

Seriously, I see this as nothing but good for Id RIGHT NOW. That'll change as the situation does. If a half-way playable BETA of Doom3 is shortly leaked to the warez world, like I suspect, then I'll be changing my opinion a bit....but as it stands I think it will work out well for DoomIII in the long run.

And please don't call me ignorant...I just didn't include the newbie factor 'cause they ain't entitled to whine about it. ;)

"And even if there is, this is the leaker's fault, people who downloaded it have absolutely nothing to do with the fact that someone at ATI or wherever might be giving away things about the game."

@DrFred: I meant indirectly. They leaked the game cause they know there are so many warez-clowns out there that'd download anything like that in an instant. I doubt they would have done it and risk being discovered if they knew it wouldn't spread like it has.

"Not a single damned one of them is going to hesitate for a second to buy the game when it comes out, it's going to be WAY to good/revolutionary/different for people to hesitate buying it due to a sh&tty alpha leak."

@digitalwanderer: I think that should read: "Not a single damned one of them is going to hesitate for a second to download the ISO when it comes out".

Seriously, if someone is ready do download a 360MB leaked game illegally, why would they have any qualms about getting the bit-perfect CD image the same way?
