We aim to answer these questions in this article with our look Doom 3 under Linux. We analyze Doom 3 with four generations of NVIDIA hardware. Why no ATI? Because it's not supported by id at this point for the Linux port. Now let's get into the numbers behind id's latest game and show what a week's worth of benchmarking produces. There's a lot here for both Linux and Windows users. Enjoy!

It's not that id does not support ATi rather that ATi does not support Linux. It will run on ATi cards for a whole 2 minutes before it crashes from *EXTREME* corruption. Way to go ATi!!!! Woo hoo!!!! AWEXOME DRIVERS YO! |

So sad that people want to run Windows games in Linux. I run Windows programs in Windows, and run Linux programs in Linux. Both run much better that way. |

Yeah, Doom 3 from the ground up was built as both a Windows and Linux game (after all, it uses OpenGL which is supported on both platforms). Most, if not ALL id games have supported both platforms for quite some time. It's not about 'optimization' for this or that. The game simply runs slower on linux. Probably has to do with a lot of things but I'm pegging it mostly at driver-related issues and probably not as good of a sound core as Windows has with its Directsound. |
