Doom 3 Beta 2 Revisited

Flexbeta.net takes a close look at Doom 3 Beta 2 with tons of screenshots. The new Doom 3 engine feels strong and robust, not like the old Quake engine. The details to the graphics are amazing, however the article does note that there are as many monsters as there are bugs, noting for example corridors that lead no where.

ide have to say that farcry and doom3 have a slight resemblence. Some area's of farcry ive noticed remind me of the doom 3 bathroom scene, the floor tiles look almost exactly the same, the wierd little monsters ide have to say look like the one in the bathroom in doom3. Theres the caves and stuff with the metal stairs and platforms that also have that doom3 style to them. Not to mention farcry also uses polybump.. |

The main difference is that light in Doom 3 is rendered in real-time, while Far Cry shadows are fakes. It may not sound like much, but when you see it rendered in real time you will see that it has a major impact on gameplay, you will wonder why all games doesnt have light like D3. |

o.0 Perhaps you're referring to the alpha leaked by ATI roughly 2 yrs ago.. The beta that was leaked a few weeks ago is entirely different in graphics, stability, optimizations, game content, etc. Get your facts straight before making a post like that.. |

do you know what the actual difference between a beta and an alpha is? So called? wth are you talking about? I don't consider betas merely "revised" alphas.. It's not JUST optimizations.. You forgot about the significant amount of game content added and the increased stability. The point is that it's not the same as the alpha by any means, and I see no problem with someone putting up a 3 page article reviewing his experience playing the beta. |

there was NO NEW BETA LEAK! this is the old alpha version from E3 with has been hand-tuned by some freaks and then renamed to "beta 2". In the meantime the game has been changed by id software by approx. 250% since that alpha leak |

The problem is that there is no leaked or public beta. The only thing available is the leaked E3 alpha. This thing that is called Beta 2 is actually the old leaked E3 alpha which has been modified a bit by some group in France (they added some maps, did some optimizations etc.), and they named their project Doom 3 Beta 2. |

Yes I agree. I think this guy is having a hard time understanding this. I also have a hard time believing Doom 3 will be capable of rendering the vast outdoor scenes in Far Cry. |

If you are suggesting they have the same engine (or similar coding), I'd suggest you to compare benchmarks provided on D3 leaks and Far Cry. Shader code in Far Cry is miles ahead of D3. |

Hey, I have a hard time believing Far Cry can render some of the vast outdoor scenes in Far Cry at times too! |

Jyncus, I'm going to have to shoot down your comment just because of that last sentance of yours. The "beta" is nothing more than the alpha from 2 years ago repackaged with user made maps that were NOT made by id Software. There is also a configuration setup included that can make the game run a bit faster, although you could do this before by manually editing the configuration in Notepad. I've got a copy of the binary of the ATI leak and the "beta" from recent weeks showing up on filesharing networks and they are the exact same doom3.exe. About the only thing unique that truly makes the game faster in some cases in some of the "beta" releases is a nv40 software emulator that makes the FX series cards work with the leaked Doom 3 alpha. |

I do. In a nutshell, beta is "working, but still under test". Software often go through two stages of release testing: Alpha (in-house, in most cases) and Beta. Alpha traditionally means it will run, but its incomplete and prone to crashes. Beta means its near finished, but some bugs still need to be ironed out. And what we've been playing with is a binary from an ALPHA that was not meant to be released to the public from 2 years ago. New "game content" of levels, textures, and sounds do not factor greatly in to this. Plugging in missing textures and sounds make things sort of work, half assed (yay-- a rocket launcher that shoots a silent glowing hairspray bottle!) As far as stability, ppft, the menus don't work, and the game still crashes quite a bit. Stable is an opinion, but I really don't feel this is stable at all. Crap, one offhand example: of the higher end weapons, you use a cheat to get it, fire the weapon, and the game will crash every time. My gf4ti4200 card in my secondary box runs the alpha and "beta" at the same speed-- which is--- not very well, maybe average 10 fps, max 24. My fx 5900 card runs with nv40 emulation software quite well 22 fps average, but again, there is no differance in fps between the two. AI from the monsters are exactly the same. I could go on and on, but I'm going to bring it down to one point: you can only do so much to a game without a patched binary (i.e. Doom3.exe) to run it. |

really, I thought a uber-Radeon-DX9 card had no problem to run Far Cry fluently in 1280x1024 with 8xAA and 8xAF at a minimum of 60 fps/s... or so at least is everyone reporting at rage3d.net |

Funny. While I don't really wanna comment on the general R3D users. I will say a lot of people on the net lie &/or are very misinformed. |
