Well as far as I know, even with DirectX 9.0c you will not see PS3.0 in Farcry (as said a guy with 9.0c beta)
We will have to wait for a new Farcry PS 3.0 Patch (or PS 3.0 mod as they call it).
Perhaps also wait for new Forceware Drivers?

That's great news. So Dx9.0c final will be available with the RTM build of SP2 in July! That's much sooner than most people believed and great news for nvidia.

Stebs, you are right, even with DX9.0c FarCry will still run using SM2.0. But the crytek developpers said that will release the SM3.0 MOD as soon as DX9.0c is availabe. Since it will still take 2 months until this moments comes, crytek will have much time optimizing its SM3.0 mod.

I'm pretty sure most people will be surprised at how great this MOD will look when crytek has more time experimenting with SM3.0. I mean, the current SM3.0 mod was only 3 weeks in the making, until july they will have had 3 months to code this thing :)

PS 3.0 isn't going to add ANY eye-candy to Far Cry that you can't already get, it should just help a bit with performance.

The big question is how much will it help, that's what I want to know.

There will be no visual differences between PS 2.0+ & PS 3.0 though, that one has been pretty thoroughly covered. ;)

eh, I wasn't talking once about PS3.0, I was talking about SM3.0!

Please reread my previous post and notice that I said SM and not PS because there is a difference between SM2.0 and SM3.0, features wise mostly in VS3.0 but also PS3.0 gains many advantages due to the flexiblity PS offers. It's not about maximum instruction counts as most shaders do not use more than 50 instructions maximum but it's about branching and looping which can combine effects like you would never to do it in PS2.0 because it would be too cost effective.

Again, the PS3.0 advantage is not about being able to 5000 instructions but to combine and loop 30 instructions in any way you want. PS2.0 can't do that

and no offense, nothing against you but I'm not in any way agreeing with ATI that SM3.0 (or PS3.0 for that matter) offers nothing new because in that case we could stop right there with SM2.0 and never gain release a new shader model.

We already have unlimited instruction counts due to F-Buffer, what would we want more...? /sarcasm

As with any program, also shaders will never offer real freedom without loops and branches and even if you could code Windows without any loops it would be at least 10 times as big and ugly as it currently is and it would be at least 10 times slower than the version we know now.

It's not different with shaders. More complex and better looking shaders will be possible with SM3.0 and even with PS3.0. Those who don't agree with that will see they are wrong by next year the latest.

And ATI should better be prepared to explain why SM3.0 suddenly looks that great although they stated that everything can be done with their current hardware.

it's called FUD

there will be a LOT of it till they stop milking old tech and release their own dx 9c card (r5xx), and then it'll suddenly BE the re-invention of sliced bread.

SM3.0 wont bring much eye candy now, because the 6800 is not very good at it. When R500 comes out that will change because they will be able to use it much much more. The NV40 just isnt fast enough to make good use of the eye candy, it will only benifit from the speed boost.

That's the fun bit, it's still all speculation at this point.

You are correct, I mistook "SM" for "PS"...but it's still not going to bring any new effects, it should just help performance.

I could be wrong and you could be right, we should all find out pretty soon either way. 8)

Its speculation unless you have written SM3.0 code! Dont get me wrong, it is the NV40s biggest advantage, but dont expect much until NV50 and R500. By the end of the NV40s life (ie just before nv50 premiers) it might be a decent feature, but for now its not upto much.

So dx9.0c brings us ps3.0. ATI cards do not support this. That makes all ATI cards non dx9 compliant cards.
Isn't that ironic?

yes, it is, there was much nvidia bashing from ati because it's parts weren't fully dx 9 compliant, and now ati expect you to swallow it for 9.0c.

yeah, just like the unlimited shader instructions will help the FX?...still waiting for it.

Some people seem to forget fast.

Actually it doesnt, sorry to burst your bubble, but to be DX9 compliant you only need SM2.0, SM3.0 is an option.

Too bad that I was talking about the "unlimited" shader instructions you get due to F-Bugger from ATI. I wasn't talking about the FX line :)

anyway, your statement is besides the point because if we didn't need loops and dynamic branches for shaders, one should have just stopped at SM2.0, waited for some years until our "unlimited" instructions architectures have the performance to execute those shaders in a speedy way. My point was not saying that current architectures can already do that just fine.
