DirectX 10...and so it ends

There are troubled times ahead. Through one bold move, Microsoft has decided that it will not support, the already too ?old? DirectX 9, not to mention DirectX 8 or any of the previous versions. But... it appears to be some logic hidden somewhere.

I mean seriously ... when is vista going to be released ... in 1 year or even later ... which games that run slow today will run slow in one year ?? no game ... so if you loose 10% or 20% performance for older DX games ... who does care ? the PC performance at that time will be enough to compensate this ... and dropping older parts ain't that bad idea ... anyone always does say MS unstable ... insecure ... now that they want to drop and outdated part of this so bad code ... it not right, too I say - wait till its time to really conclude anything I very much doubt MS will cut of one arm by shutting down any game that existes up to now |

Maybe that's exactly what they want...probably one of those "independent" studies suggested that most people pirating the OS are the gaming fans. |

Last I heard Vista was August 2006. Can someone point to an article at Microsoft where it backs this story up? This is the first I heard of it. |

This has been known for a long time and actually was the initial reason why MS decided to scrap the DX name and go with WGF because they changed several things fundamently which broke backwards compatibility. |

Wouldn't surprise me, but what in the world does that have to do with poor OpenGL and DX9 and lower support? |

One more move into the wrong direction. Time to get a console and let PC gaming die? |

I dont have anything against new technology, even if it throws away old stuff completely, but why do they have to do this now? why cant they wait until the very old PC AT technology is getting replaced by something totally different and all people will have to switch anyway? Like someone said already, they are inventing the wheel again while there are still cars being sold that need the old wheel. |

Thats what im wondering..no where did they cite a source. I heard that DX7 was going to be axed and that DX8 was being considered but that was from a non cited source article as well. I dont think they would kill DX9 games..would be stupid with the new hardware out now...new games out now. I want to see who the source was for that article. Anyone can type up a story if they do not have to cite a credible source. Was probably the inquirer anyway :P |

Good God no, I'd rather install a dual boot with Win98 again then ever resort to using a console. Consoles are schwag. |

I'm calling Bullshite on this one. DX9, has a few years left in it, yet. And developers are only now getting to grips with it. That, and the Xbox 360 is DX9, which should last MS for another 5 years. So, cross PC-XB360-PC, development WILL happen, now that both are more than capable without any missing features. I can't see developers coding for DX10, then downgrading to DX9, for XB360 ports. DX7, and DX8, I can see being dropped. Afterall, there's really no reason at all to still be using a DX8 card, today. Radeon 95xx cards are as cheap as a single game, now, and more than capable of running today's games. |

This is a complete misconception. Vista will not include a default OpenGL API, but anyone can install the API (for instance a runtime that's released on the gamecd etc). Not such a big deal. |
