Creative DOOM 3 Patent?

Posted by: Newsfactory on: 07/29/2004 04:24 PM [ Print | 5 comment(s) ] · 1356 views

[H]ardOCP reports there has been much discussion on this whole issue of Creative?s patent and Carmack?s comments on the issue. Most people are upset at this move by Creative, some even suggesting that the patent held by Creative could be challenged on the ?prior art? basis. This post from September 2003 by NVIDIA?s Sim Dietrich lends a lot of credibility to the ?prior art? argument.

Don't worry about it fellas. I described this technique publicly a few months before they filed the patent - hence Prior Art. Ironically, it was at a Creative Labs developer's forum. During my stencil buffer talk, I described doing shadow volumes the 'reverse' way. At the time, I didn't realize the major reason why the z fail method is better than the z pass method, although I did realize they were logically equivalent, which is why it's now known as 'Carmack's Reverse' and not 'Dietrich's Reverse'!

OMG, Why do they even worry about crap like this, not like theres anything to gain. Why is creative crying lie a baby that had its lollypop taken away from it by ID. Creatie shuld shut the hell up and handle it likle a big boy and not give a rats ass who uses what and where and how and who """"patented""""" it.

As stated before by SHS, Creative implemented this in the Unreal patch they released which included stencil buffer shadows in the Unreal engine. This was in 1999.

Who the ***** cares for shadowing anyway, I want FULL AHD support FFS! How long has this been available now? 2 or 3 years? And still NO game fully supports it so that you actually hear a difference. I dont give a shit if its creative only, its a very nice feature and I want it in games!!!!!!!!!

SimmerD updated his post

"- Update : Actually I first presented this at GDC '99 in March, although I may have also presented at at the Creativity '99 conference later in the year as well."

Creatives patent was filed in May I beleive, SimmerD's presentation was definately prior art, I REALLY hope we hear that something is being done about this formally soon.
