A step in the right direction, I hope others will follow.
Universal announced that they will drop their prices for CD´s dramaticly to invoke a new market strategy to prevent illegal music downloads and get customers back into the stores, as is reported by german Golem magazine.
"Universal is selling 30 % of the whole CD market in the USA and this is a great position to start this new strategy. We hope, when we drop the prices, that customers will get back into stores and buy more CD´s", told Universal.
CD´s will cost 12,98 USD for musicians like Blink 182, Bon Jovi, Mariah Carey, Sheryl Crow, Eminem, 50 Cent and other older artists like ABBA or James Brown, prices will be round about 35 % less than the actual current album prices.
The new strategy will be go live in Q4 2003. If the price cut´s will also touch the european market, is not known yet.

12,98 USD is still pretty expensive but better than asking €22.95 for a cd :/ Yesterday I saw a cd from Roadrage, somewhat a collection of different artists from the Roadrunner Records label for €9.99. |

too late, too little. They should have dropped prices by 30% at the beginning of the 90's. Until yesterday they were still talking about high production costs of the CDs and therefore they couldn't drop the prices, although prices had already dropped b 80% at around 1990. They stole our money, now some people are stealing it back... talking about being fair |

the right way at last! best possible news today. but: i'm living in germany. hope they drop prices in europe as well. cd-prices rised with the introduction of the euro. they where at 25-30DM, now they are about 18Euro (almost 36DM). |

$12.98? Isn't that how much they cost normally anyway? Make it below $10 and I may buy a CD again, |

Talk about late. Kind of like closing the barn door after the horses have run away. |

have to admit the title is a little wrong.. "CD Will Get Cheaper To Prevent Illegal Downloads" cds getting cheaper will not prevent anything from happening.. Even if CDs are 1 cent i bet people will still download them... |
