Buying Reliability

Posted by: Newsfactory on: 04/25/2005 06:37 PM [ Print | 7 comment(s) ] · 921 views

Understanding the importance of reliability is the first step in overcoming socially accepted misguided conceptions. Let me start off by saying that in the computer world there are no perfect components or perfect manufacturers. What there is, are manufacturers who are significantly better then others. People incorrectly associate perfection with reliability.

You get what you pay for holds true to this day. There are no wonder deals whether on EBay or PriceWatch...

And what about DFI for mobos?

Abit should have got a nod too at least, looks like the guy just picked the biggest brand names he could think of.

And how could you list IBM hard drives with a straight face? :?

LMAO, ABit is not reliable. DFI is average and there is nothing wrong with IBM harddrives. Then again only OEMs and Dealers would know. I agree with this guy.

Don't believe everything you hear online IBM harddrives are no more unreliable then any of the other brands. The IBM Deskstar line had the same RMA numbers as drives of the same size from Maxtor and WD. Like the author says most people online are not dealers and OEMs so they wouldn't know.

...spoke to the people at IBM rather extensively about 'em.

Even IBM admitted to their ridiculously high failure rate with that series, then the put out a drive that they recomended you not run for 24 hours continuosly?!?

I don't think I'd buy anything from you. :?

IBM never admitted any problems with those drives, they actually said RMA numbers were normal for that line. What everyone online fails to realize is the Deskstar GXP Series was one of the most widely recommended drives online. All harddrives fail now combine that with a bunch of hardware amatuers and you get this media fiasco. What makes this story keep growing is that as time goes on more of the drives fail. Duh, welcome to what dealers and OEMs have known for years.
