Beware of DreamCatcher's Painkiller

Posted by: Newsfactory on: 04/09/2004 11:07 AM [ Print | 24 comment(s) ] · 23048 views

Anybody who plans to buy this game: HOLD ON, DON'T DO IT YET! Wait and see!

It seems Painkiller is going to be the biggest game copy protectionb scandal in the history: the Painkiller game IS NOT working AT ALL with a DOZEN drive, including the widely used (HP, Compaq, Dell) OEM LG drives!

The current list, compiled by me - PAINKILLER DOESN'T WORK WITH THE FOLLOWING DRIVES:

# Pan International CyberDrive 240
# ASUS CD-S400
# M a t s h i t a CR-581-B
# Philips CDD2000
# LG GDR-8161B - this is in the majority drive in xwX000-family HP WS, also known as
# HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8161B
# Toshiba HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR-8081N (2002 sept laptop drive)
# LG HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GMA-4020B Apr 2003 IDE (internal drive) - probably none of these LGs are working
# HL-ST-DVDRAM GSA-4081 - I bought it weeks ago, this is that 8x DVD+/-R/RW/RAM drive!
# YAMAHA CRW-F1E - the tattoo drive

and still counting!

Dreamcatcher, the publisher of Painkiller title DID NOTHING BEFORE ITS RELEASE, although they KNEW THIS PROBLEM VERY WELL, as they made a small topic on their web forum on April 5th, 48 hours before the game arrived to the stores.

It's safe to say it was a malicious move to hide the truth as long as they can, avoid hurting their sales - even they knew already they're shipping a defective game.

The UT04 copy protection was broken too. I had to crack it to get it to run. There's a mighty thread on the Atari boards about it, good old SecuROM.

Thats too bad about painkiller, I was really looking forward to buying since the demo seemed real promising, after the ut2k4 fiasco I think I will hang onto my money now and hope that doom3 isn't in the same boat, if it ever comes out.

God damnit people why is EVERYONE like "If Doom 3 ever comes out". The god damn game NEVER had a set release date. The showing off of the technology when the GF3 came out was nothing more than a miniature tech demo.

According to the latest report from Carmack himself, Doom 3 is "very soon".

so SHUT THE ***** UP already.

This is good news.
Not that it is good, but it is good to KNOW, and it is a good word to SPREAD.

To be FORCED TO CRACK a game just to play it... To be FORCED TO BREAK THE LICENSE just to play the game... its nuts!

The Copy-Protection insanity must stop.
People must show that they are not prepared to pay for games they cannot use. Spread the word, and let bad press show that we are not up for this shit anymore.

It can make you write posts that makes no sense whatsoever.

Where was doom3 even mentioned in the news post? It's about painkiller - which is a totally DIFFERENT game and NOT doom3 at all.

Yes someone has a crack for it..

As Jemy said you will be forced to crack it. And it may not work online if cracked, if there is online play.

I like this news :)

I believe there were a few people who had problems installing UT2004, using the dvd.

Dont think it was a big deal, maybe the drives needed updated or the people were running windows 95 or something..

i've found with alot of these games that give problems, that if i boot into safe mode and install i have no probs whatsoever installing them, hell even Daemon tools works in safemode in XP :)

the draw back to installing via safe mode.... it takes a bit longer to install :)

The "fiasco" was getting my brand new asus dvd drive to properly recognize the ut2k4 dvd when I try to start the game.
My secondary dvd burner wouldn't see it either.
There is a huge thread about this at the epic forums.
Fortunately someone released a no-cd for the dvd version or else I would have been sol.

I checked for a firmware update for both of my dvd drives but none were available, one of them was only a few weeks old when I got the game and no I don't use 95, I use w2k.

I sure hope some of you having trouble with the game were smart enough to put CD3 in the drive to play & not CD1. I know there are issues with some CD drives but I had a friend call me complaining the game wouldn't run & the problem was he was trying to use CD1 & not CD 3.

That's fine but for some, the game doesn't even start to install.

Drives and some software seem to be blacklisted, or the protection is so screwed up that thos drives simply can't read it...god knows....

Just a theory:

It might work because in safe mode, UDMA is disabled, same as the lame recomendation their forums give.

I'm glad you made it work, but many find such an alternative innaceptable.

This is true. However I have to wonder how often these things are blown outta proportion. With the amount of replies here so far I think only a few people actually have the paid for game. Me being 1 of them. There are known issues & drives listed on the main forums. But almost always CD1 is the cd to be checked. & even in the manual it says to use CD1. Only way I knew to use CD3 was there was a tiny flyer in the package that said the info in the manual was incorrect & to use CD3. As well as my friend had the wrong CD in when it wouldn't run for him. He also has 1 drive that the CD will not work in when he goes to start the game. Luckly his DVD drive does work from the game start up.

i havnt tried this with painkiller mind you, but my Mafia, Gothic 2, and a couple others can only be installed in safe mode... the funny thing is the first time i brought said games home, they installed normally, it was only recently i found i had to use the safe mode trick to get them going again if i had to reinstall em.

omg, i just played Painkiller... the game looks cool.. but tbh, nothing we havnt seen in RTCW really, but at least RTCW had a single player game that had.... substance.

in painkiller:
1.enter checkpoint
2.kill 100+ creatures collecting souls as you go (wasnt this a UT mod?)
3. collect coins (COINS!?) and power ups (sounds like mario brothers)
4.move to next check point
5 repeat steps 1-4

when overall level is done, you collect tarrot cards or something, but thats where i lost intrest..

perhaps Dreamcatcher, should try some RealityCheck, and thank god this setback occured, they could surely take it back to.. the storyboard phase, and rethink it a bit from there lol.
