Battlefield 2142 Demo

The year is 2142, and the dawn of a new Ice age has thrown the world into a panic. The math is simple and brutal: The soil not covered by ice can only feed a fraction of the Earth`s population.

It is only OK. It didn't suck me in the way Battlefield 2 did. I think it is because EA decided to disable most of the weapons in the demo.

I played the "Tuning Beta". I don't think it will pull away too many BF2 fans. The tuning beta was pretty buggy. Hopefully EA worked them out since then.

The open public tuning beta was a pile of crap, hands down... The versions after were a ton better...

The demo is eh I am not as into it as BF2, unless the retail version can show me something different I don't know that I would keep it.

I can't believe the lack of supported screen resolutions and (as usual), no widescreen support.

Ok I tried it as well and this is my experience...

Anything I don't mention is OK

On the technical aspect:

*The demo takes about 1Gb HDD space and that's only partially justified, the texture are as with BF2 average

Also, it the same shader-shadow problem as with BF2 if you use UHQ settings on your ATi card, the vehicle shadows are sometimes jaggy

*The game runs very good, fps wise, you can probably use the same settings as with BF2

*The overall experience IS different from the BF2 game(only in detail though), the special effects are a bit better, sometimes even very nice, like with some explosions

*The sound effects is a huge step forwards, dare I say it, it has about the best sound engine currently available in any game, the sound field is much more clear with all the different things happening

*You still get the message 'There is something wrong with your connection' no matter how good your ping on average is with a server

With online games, when you have lag, the game engine will calculate where you might be if you had no network hick but not with the BF engine

It will just kick you, who's fault is it? that's the question but the BF engine devs think it's your fault 'There is something wrong with your connection'

On the gameplay aspect:

*It feels very much like BF2, which means there is the risk you will get bored quickly, yes it's addictive but addiction is something else, something can be very boring but still addictive

There are only so many vehicles, there aren't many objects in the game, like with BF2 any nice detail is non-existent, so no sticky notes on a board, a desk lamp that has fallen, or little stones on the road, if you know what I mean

*Supprisingly people seem a bit nicer in this game, compared to BF2, maybe because it's still new to everybody I dunno

Also, almost nobody repairs or heals yet, which can get you into trouble at times

*What is a bit annoying that if you play a game, you are pretty aware of what is happening, with this game however it's not always clear and that's not just because you could be new to the game

On a typical BF2142 battle scene(where a group of people are fighting each other)there is much more chaos then in BF2, also it's literally more dfficult to see what's going on, I think this has to do with the colors used or the lack of it

Als, you can find yourself shooting friendly vehicles on a regular basis, friend/foe tags are only visible from close by

*Bunny hopping I haven't seen, but using the walker, I shot everything at a jumping enemy and he still survived, hmmm

A final word:

*Will BF3(if it's ever gonna happen) be like this?(with other models etc)

No, expect a completely new(DX10 based) game from EA in about 2 years or so and i'm afraid it won't be a BF3

This game is just an in-between game, between two major releases, BF2 was the first...

*All things considered is BF2142 better then BF2?

YES

*Should I download the demo?

Actually yes, it's fun and it does give a taste of things to come, in future games in general

There are not much remarks to be made about the overall demo experience, it's actually pretty good

*Will BF2142 better then Quake Wars?

There is no Quake Wars demo out yet but my guess is no, the moment BF2142 is widely available, better save your money and try the Quake Wars demo first

My overall demo rating is 7.5/10

Have fun :)

E.
