I'm still confused about this and am starting to think it's more of an Extigy 2 more than a new Audigy. The specs don't really seem to be any different than the A2...maybe it's a value version or something? |

wasnt Audigy 2 NX sorta like Extigy 2? (with the DD passhtru removed) maybe they ditched the extigy name alltogether. should prolly expect Audigy 4 in PCI-e x1 form aswell. |

Sound card upgrades are all the same these days. The features don't justify the purchase imo. What does Creative promise us now, 8.1 surround sound, and EAX 5.0? [That at best sounds marginally improved, and most non-audiophiles wouldn't notice any difference]. Most audio cards still manage to drag down the performance of games considerably [unless you have the best high end rig]. Upgrading these cards dosen't give you a big boost such as upgrading to the latest GeForce card would. I wonder how long can Creative continue to hype their 'never ending line of EAX' features. What I would like to see is a card that gives a big boost of performance, I wonder if PCI-X will provide this. Some time ago I did a test with Quake 3 - removed all sound all together from the system, and the benchmark score jumped a good 80FPS! Makes me wonder just how other games are being 'dragged down' because of sound. Why don't they give us performance increases instead of the never ending line of EAX crap? |

Agreed. I think the main reason they tend to upgrade things like this is because "it won't bog down your games" makes their old cards sound bad and it's not a tangible feature. Looking at the specs for this card...it really looks identical to my Audigy 2...which actually does a good job of keeping your FPS from dropping too much. I honestly think that taking the load off of the CPU is really the only thing they have left to add. How many people even have 7.1 systems...I *hope* they don't bother to add 8.1 any time soon. EAX 2 was a lot better than 1, but I haven't really noticed anything since then. We've got Dolby, THX, and DTS support...there isn't much left. |

Quake 3 doesn't use any accelerated sound so it is understandable that it wouldn't go any faster. EAX is great if done right. Most games don't do it right. That said, Creative as a company sucks. I think their technology could be a major boon if they actually cared about their customers. Unfortunately, Nvidia stopped Soundstorm which was arguably better than the original Audigy.. who else is there to go to? The VIA Envy24 comes close but still doesn't match it either. |

Just by judging fromt he picture at the top of this post, I have a Audigy 2 ZS Pro and it looks identical to what I already have. Now just say I wanted the Audigy 4 for some reason, could I just upgrade the card and not everything else? Anyway, what would be the point, I can't really spot any tangable difference, beside the version number :s |

"Unfortunately, Nvidia stopped Soundstorm which was arguably better than the original Audigy.. who else is there to go to? The VIA Envy24 comes close but still doesn't match it either." Depends on how you define "better". For example, Audigy supports more in/outputs than used in pretty much any Nforce sound solution, and has support for "unlimited" size MIDI soundfonts as well. Nforce is what, 4MB? Sounds like $h!t in comparison to a good soundfont. Envy24 is entirely CPU-driven and gives much worse 3D audio performance than either Audigy series or Nforce... Not good, when CPUs are very expensive and soundcards relatively cheap. |
