ATI's R600 has 64 Real Pipes

We previously wrote that the chip will have sixty four Shader units but we never realised at the time that the design is actually built around a full sixty four physical pipes. That is what various high-ranking sources are telling us. In this scenario, unless Nvidia also managed to triple its pipeline count in the upcoming G80, this chip could lose out big time when put against a 64-pipeline ATI offering.

What the Register fails to recognise is that the ATI card uses unified shaders. The 360 GPU has 48 pipelines, and that was released last year. So it is not unreasonable through a die shrink that they could not achieve 64 pipelines. Nvidia will continue to use seperate shader pipelines, while they play catchup with ATI. |

Heh that 16 pipe card spanks two 7800 gtx in sli (48 pipes) so looks that the pipes are right. And this is not some ati fanboi talks i have both (7800gtx sli & x1900xt). And if ati has 64 pipe card ready it will destroy nvidia, but this is inq talk so i take it with grain of salt. (maybe its have 64 shader pipelines). |
