In Shane's latest article, he compares the performance of a GeCube based ATI Radeon X800 Pro against the reference nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra. While taking a quick look at both cards, we benchmark with our usual array of benchmarks as well as with AA and AF enabled and with the addition of Far Cry.

The review states that "Ultra" is Nvidia's fastest card... but its not is it? Is it not right, that it should be: "6800" vs "X800" "PRO" vs "ULTRA" "Extreme Edition" vs "Platinum Edition" ??? |

im running a 3200+ with a ATi X800pro with cat.4.6 drivers and my benchmarks are showing quite a bit higher and I cranked up my desplay settings all the way, so take it with a grain of salt and just use it as a base line to go by and not what you will get. I should have been slower just by the fact the test system was using a 3400+ cpu and im using a 3200+ cpu,I agree the test should have been a X800XT card ver. the 6800 ultra |

The product simply marketed as "6800" is a cropped version of the real card, that doesnt match the specifications of the 6800 product line. There is also no pure "x800" card, as "x800pro" is the lowest product from ATI, at least according to the testssites ive read, and ati's website. |

Pricewise, it should (unfortunate to nvidia) be Platinum Edition vs Ultra... As XT is cheaper! |

opengl performance sucks too much on the x800's, the 6800gt looks like it's going to be the best card for the price. |

I concur, although I love my 9800xt I think my next card will be whatever the fastest nvidia has to offer 2 months from now, I find myself playing open_gl games more and more and the ati just doesn't compare in either performance or quality under gl. |

Who plays opengl games anyway.. Id say 90% of what I play is DX Plus the scores look fairly close to me. Other than quake 3 but again, who the hell plays that? |

Many people prefer Open GL prior to Direct X. |

Being that the vast majority of games are Direct3D what does it matter what people "prefer", you're usually not given a choice in the matter anymore even. It makes more sense to use the graphics card that works better in 80% of games than the one that might in the other 20%. |

This is true but gl is still better IMO and most of the games I have purchased lately use it and although the 9800xt doesn't run them as good as my brothers 5950 does the ati smokes in D3D games. Call of duty, KOTOR, jedi academy, elite force2, MOH, wolfenstein (both ET and GOTY) are all gl games and all the quake and HL series have gl available and doom3 will be gl. |

Has anyone noticed that this is a Pro against an Ultra? It should be the XT against the Ultra. |
