ATI R300 Needs External Power Supply?

As the release is drawing nearer also the rumours thicken about ATI's DirectX 9 capable GPU the R300 - which according The Inquirer will be dubbed Radeon 9700. According to the latest reports the R300 will have 107 million transistors on die which is said to result in the need of some sort of external power supply...



This is because the current AGP 2.0 standard can only handle 40 watts of maximum power output. The first wave of R300 will be manufactured in 0.15 micron process as silicon chip provider TSMC is preparing the 0.13 micron structure for the second generation of R300.
