AMD Announces Technology to Enable Ten-fold Performance Leap in Future Transistors
AMD AMD today announced it has fabricated the smallest double-gate transistors reported to date using industry standard technology. AMD's research breakthrough could foster the placement of a billion transistors on the same size chip that currently holds 100 million transistors, enabling a vastly richer computing experience. "Transistor development is essential to the creation of higher-performing products for our customers," said Craig Sander, AMD's vice president of Technology Development. "The entire semiconductor industry is working to meet the increasing challenges of developing new transistor designs that are smaller and higher-performing and yet can be manufactured with minimal deviation from today's industry standard manufacturing processes. The FinFET transistor indicates we can continue to deliver very high performance products while preserving the basic technology infrastructure our industry relies upon."

10 times more transistors doesn't mean 10 times more performance! The Itanium 2 second edition has 500 million transistors and is only about 20% faster. it does only mean more material, higher prices, higher power consumption..... a 500 transistor chip consts the manufacturer about $400 to build, and a 1000 transistor would cost about $1000 or more to build, just to say, a modern cpu costs now about $50 to produce.... this cpu would suck much more power, and are BIG, and HOT, and think of a $2000 cpu that is 20x bigger hoter and uses power like your cooking plate, lol |
