AGEIA PhysX PPU Videos - Ghost Recon and Cell Factor

Posted by: Newsfactory on: 05/03/2006 03:06 PM [ Print | 3 comment(s) ] · 3580 views

We happened to play around with a PC equiped with an AGEIA PhysX processor and the new Ghost Recon demo and a demo copy of Cell Factor. Come see our videos!

Our time with the Cell Factor demo showed what a true PhysX game could potentially look like, and it is impressive. The amount of interactivity shown in our videos is unrivaled in any other title out now or that I have seen in development. Unfortunately, this puts developers in a bind -- do they create a unique title like this and require a PhysX card to play it, thus cutting out nearly all of their market initially, or do they stick to "effects physics" like we see in GRAW that don't push the envelope? It's the same issue that AGEIA and company have been having to address with developers since the technology was first announced last year.

The Ghost Recon videos was just sad. 250$ för that?! No additional effects in a game is ever worth that much.

Cell Factor, though impressive... also was sort of disapointing here. Atleast after I saw the other HD trailer Ageia themselfs released. This video was only running about 20fps unlike the official trailer which made it drastically less impressive.

The GRAW stuff is just sad, a ripoff and I can't even see why the PhysX was even used (if it was) for those effects. All I saw was MORE stuff being drawn, not anything that related to hardcore physics (like deformation, authentic gravity etc.), just more debree.

What I expect from a PPU is that when I shoot a can, the physics of what happens to it and where it ends up will be calculated correctly with a PPU instead of being given a random direction/velocity value. I really expect physics to be more authentic in a game utilizing a PPU, not seeing more random debree or "cooler explosions".
