Interesting article and report over at 3dgpu.com ... while checking ATI's latest earning report, I found this interesting expense that seems to confirm the rumor of how much ATI paid Valve for the Half Life 2 marketing/bundling deal.
"A non-recurring charge of about $6.0 million, consisting of incentive compensation and other charges associated with the signing of a development agreement"

we have in the region of 1000 plus Affiliates! just imagine how many news article, that are sent to us everyday? let alone all you guy's that submit news! we changed the layout a bit as you can see! we try to credit everyone and sometimes we have multiple posts and have to deicide who to credit with the article.
and as to the NV38 seals Nvidia's coffin article
Some peeps called me an ATI fanboy I don't think so, I've had a nvidia card for the last 4 years or the suggestion I did it for Hit's again I don't think so, I've had a bigger article than this since Wednesday! I've spoken to the company involved and as I don't want to cause them an more headaches than they have! you would be shocked, if you knew? to me news is news.
I post articles that I think are news worthy or worth a Debate and I had some Peeps knocking me for not crediting them for the article which I got from www.gamersdepot.com.
I got to say there nothing stopping you from not reading the article if it's that full of BS
And Yes it would be great if Nvidia were a bit more open and did try and help their Customers rather than treating them like Muppets! maybe that's why ATI have a big following.

Yea I was thinking the same thing... but they've made deals with other game makers.. like ubisoft w/ Raven Shield.... could be part of that 6 million.. |

Common practice these days. So no big deal. All IHVs pay money to developers, for various reasons, like PR, bundling etc. |

so, are the new Radeon 9800 XTs now getting bundled with the HL2 source code? On a completely different matter. Does anyone dare to explain to me why the HL2 sky shader (which is a PS2.0 shader) only DX call is 2D texture? This could have been much easier done with DX6.0 without any bloody shaders. I thought valve was only using PS2.0 where it's absolutely necessary and not deliberately screwing up NVDA with unneeded work. Ah, 6 millions $... I understand now... |

Please remember that most of the 'analysis' of this code so far is either wrong or rubbish. |

Its would be very fast in DX9 even on an FX. I doesnt matter what ATI paid, it wont help them much, wait for the XGI cards and you will see that HL2 will run very well on them too. Its only nvidia having trouble. Remember its nvidias own fault. Valve and every other developer is having to help nvidia out here.. they dont have to do anything !! |

You're right. I'm definitely waiting for the performance results of the XGI cards. Only this can confirm whether HL2 is written for standart DX calls or optimized for any special card. I just don't get it that the sky shader's main code is just on single line. I thought PS2.0 would be used for some reason, namely more precision and more instructions which There are certainly more examples of this in the source code. It's just the sky shader which popped into my eye after looking into it. |

From my experience of DX9 the difference between an 'ATI optimized' path and a simple DX9 path is quite small, maybe 5 to 10%. The R3x0 is quite pure, there isnt much optimization that can be done. From my experience of the XGI cards they follow a similar line. DX9 is a very different beast from DX8 and lower. What might look like strange code isnt. HL2 is a very different DX9 game to halo or TR, its much more advanced. No offence to anyone out there but a lot of the guys disecting the HL2 source code really dont know enough about DX9 to make a valid comment. |

It turns out this was a payment made to microsoft as part of the XBOX2 deal. Payment for licenses i would guess. |
