3rd Party Fix For WindowsXP Workstation Service Problem!

I've created a fix for a nasty bug in WinXP which seems to affect Abit KT7A users. Symptoms are the computer sitting there during bootup doing nothing for 40-80 seconds, and you can't do anything.
Update: Apparently there was a bug in that fix. Users need to redownload cause 3 services need to be stopped for this fix to work.
The problem is caused by the Workstation service, which takes this long to start up and blocks other services from starting. The fix starts up the Workstation service (Which is required for file-sharing) non-blocking, solving the problem. The problem is present on the computers of 3 out of 4 of my friends running XP, and all those affected have KT7A motherboards. I don't know if it affects all KT133A based mobos, or even all Via mobos. All I know is that the problem manifests itself even after a fresh-install of WinXP. More info, and the fix, can be found here: Link to fix page Regards, Guspaz. Note: Warp2Search urges users to take caution if you use this fix. Create a system restore point, check the file for viruses etc...

Hi, it's me, Guspaz (Creator). I also agree that a restore point is a good idea. There is no reason why this thing should go wrong, it just changes the service's start setting, and starts it manually. BUT nevertheless, you never know what might go wrong. It's not my fault if your computer blows up and you didn't make a restore point, though I've been hammering on the thing and it works flawlessly on my machine. Regards, Guspaz. PS: Enjoy! I'm sure enjoying fast boot-ups. |

Argh! Found a bug that was preventing it from working. Forgot about the services that need Workstation and start it themselves. This has been fixed. Please download the new version if you've already downloaded the old one. New name is servicefix2.exe Regards, Guspaz. |

The "Workstation" and "Server" Services Are part of "Client For Microsoft Networks." In Network Connections Properties of your Dialup/Ethernet/Internet Connection Device, Removing This Will Remove the services from the computer, yet alone stopping them. |

That doesn't fix the problem, that just stops it. You can do the same thing by disabling the services. If you do this, like you say, then you loose access to File Sharing, which many people use. My fix solves the problem, BUT allows you to KEEP USING File Sharing. Regards, Guspaz |

The problem isn't winxp, its all these crappy VIA/AMD combos that've become too popular lately. They need all of these little software crutches that sort of keep them running...sometimes...if I use BIOS A on friday and BIOS B on monday....and the 'nopentium' (linux) option on tuesday. Who cares if its cheaper, the whole platform is riddled with bugs...and they've had 3 or 4 revisions to get it right! VIA should go out of business and AMD should make their own chipsets. Something as high level as the Workstation service should NEVER fail on just one motherboard model. If that is happening, that's a signal that something in the hardware is VERY wrong. Until AMD gets their act together, its intel all the way for me (and no they're not perfect either, but they're much closer to it than AMD's platform). I laugh at all those kids at LAN parties whos' AMD/via boxes keep crashing...and then the best part is hearing them complain about how the game is coded badly..rofl |

Well, I can tell you that life using AMD kit is far much more fun. Firstly it is reliable, I have zero complaints and I use 2 machines for video encoding, sometimes running 1 utility for over 12 hours. If you buy Intel, you dont get a very fast machine for your moeny, and quite laughably, not many updates to improve your machines either. I like owning AMD kit, theres far more happening, it costs less and theres far more going on. At least this company cares about their customers |

The reason Via is so popular is that their motherboards provide the best performance bar none. As for Intel mobos, I'd use the P4X266 chipset any day. I trust Via. I don't trust Intel. And the Workstation service doesn't fail, it just takes ages to start up. Regards, Guspaz. |
