ATI Catalyst 7.7 Performance Analysis
Posted by: Regeneration on: 07/23/2007 10:50 PM [ Print | 0 comment(s) ] · 960 views
As we roll into a new financial year we find ourselves again with a new set of catalyst drivers for the month of July. Though this month the Catalyst Performance Analysis is getting a bit of an overhaul. The X1950XTX is going bye-bye along with the X1600XT, in their place we will use the HD2600PRO and HD2600XT. We will also continue to use the HD2900XT as the high-end card, and for a look at last generation we will include the highly popular X1950PRO.
TweakTown has more.

AMD’s ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT continues to see performance increases and it is clear that
this month the driver team had their eye on improving OpenGL performance, which is great considering Enemy Territory is just around the corner. The bad news is though that there are still no changes to AA tests and this is something that is hurting the HD 2900 XT at the moment.

Catalyst 7.4 Vista OpenGL Performance Analysis
Posted by: Regeneration on: 05/25/2007 11:41 PM [ Print | 0 comment(s) ] · 1074 views
There is nothing better then getting free performance boosts for our Radeon cards from the monthly Catalyst software updates. Every month we expect to see some new goods from AMD’s finest software department. Sometimes our expectations are too high and we are left somewhat disappointed, and sometimes they manage to rock us all. Last month AMD has released Catalyst 7.4 and claimed that they had boosted its OpenGL performance on Windows Vista. With AMD’s Catalyst 7.5 around the corner, and the hype around R600, we relaxed, sat back and tested the Catalyst 7.4 suite under Microsoft’s new Vista operating system to investigate AMD’s claims.
Are they telling the truth? And if it’s true – is it a pure performance improvement? or something we have to pay for by sacrificing image quality?

Radeon HD 2900XT To Launch on 14th of May

Reading around today, some over excited folk got their wires crossed and
claimed AMD would be launching their upcoming R600XT on May 2nd. That’s simply not correct – Nvidia is launching the 8800 Ultra on May 2nd at a retail price of at least $999 USD but supply will be very low due to yield and pricing related issues. The word on the streets of Taipei tells us that unless Nvidia reduce their 8800 Ultra pricing, you’ll have a hard time actually buying this part.

ATI Radeon HD 2900 XTX Benchmarked @ DailyTech

ATI Radeon HD 2900 XTX video cards feature 1GB of GDDR4 video memory, besting the GeForce 8800 GTX’s 768MB of GDDR3 video memory. GPU manufacturers often wait to set the exact clock frequencies of bins until just weeks before launch. Our Radeon HD 2900 XTX sample was released to board partners in the second week of April, features memory clocked at 2.02 GHz and a core clock of 750 MHz. Physically, the Radeon HD 2900 XTX core is identical to the Radeon HD 2900 XT core. Both feature 320 stream processors, but the XTX differs by bringing GDDR4 to the package.Despite the reference clock speed differences, DailyTech managed to push the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT up to 845 MHz core and 1.99 GHz memory. Unlike the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT benchmarked yesterday,
the HD 2900 XTX is a 12-inch card geared specifically towards OEMs and system integrators.

Anh beat me to R600 benchmarks by a few mere hours -- when you snooze, you lose at DailyTech. Needless to say, I feel somewhat compelled to add my benchmarks to the mix as well. The system I'm using is an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6800, ASUS P5N32SLI-E with 2x2GB DDR2-800. My tests this morning used the Catalyst 8.361 RC4 driver.
The card used was a Radeon HD 2900 XT 512MB.

AMD equips the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT with 320 stream processors to take on NVIDIA’s GeForce 8800 GTS, which features 96 stream processors. However, AMD and NVIDIA have taken different approaches towards their unified shader designs. AMD pairs the R600 GPU with 512MB of GDDR3 memory clocked at 1.65 GHz across an eight-channel, 512-bit memory interface. In comparison, the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS features 640MB of 1.6 GHz GDDR3 memory on a 320-bit memory interface.

ATI Catalyst 7.4 with Control Panel

We have noticed that some people still prefer to use the old Control Panel (CP) over the Catalyst Control Center (CCC). As a result we have decided to incorporate the Control Panel into the

And the rumour goes on and on and on...i heard the R600 can fly ;-)
THE DRIVER FOR the R600 appears to indicate there will bet at least four different versions of the card.
"R600" = ati2mtag_R600, PCIVEN_1002&DEV_9402
"R600 " = ati2mtag_R600, PCIVEN_1002&DEV_9403
"R600 " = ati2mtag_R600, PCIVEN_1002&DEV_9400
"R600 " = ati2mtag_R600, PCIVEN_1002&DEV_9401
DAAMIT is still uncomfortable using any names due the leaking problems and each of these cards has its driver, for secondary display. We don’t know the difference between the cards, uet.

As you may or may not have heard, ATi is going to be offering a new AA mode coming up soon for single ATi cards. No clue exactly what is/isn't supported yet as they haven't even really announced what it is yet, but rumor has it to be a MSTAA mode (alpha to coverage). And since tEd over at Beyond3D once again figured out how to hack the beta Catalyst 6.10 set to get it working I figure it's ok to mention it.
